I've been here a few weeks, and this isn't the first time I've found myself in the position of being an outsider. So, I just have to ask. What's your experience with the locals and their treatment of us rift-farers?

I'm glad to hear that. It didn't expect that people would stop existing with the full spectrum of personalities and preferences I'm used to. For better or for worse. As long as most of them are better.

Aye, well, I can't tell you which side of the scales it falls on compared to your own planet. To mine, I'd say it's more or less alike.

I get it. I realize I'm generalizing things here but I wouldn't expect them to put up with poor treatment.

Does that go for things in general or just the people?

Just the people, lad. There's a distinct lack of giant, strangely hospitable sea creatures back home--that one, I'll admit, took more'n a little getting used to.

A lack of hospitable sea creatures implies the existence of inhospitable ones? For me it was the sea in general. We had been suffering a world-wide drought since before I was born.

Being a riftfarer isn't so bad. I've never had anyone treat me any differently, at least. We're just people living here and trying to make it, too. I've maybe got a scowl from a cranky old lady here and there, but yeah.

As far as I know, though. Riftfarers have been showing up in this world for years now.

The locals are fine, for the most part. The Armadas see us all as pawns. We're just pieces on their boards, and they see no problem in shoving us around if they decide that's "what's best".

what is an armada if not a military operation on some level
that's a different kind of trouble than what i was concerned about but i appreciate the assessment

Thank you for sharing though. I won't lie, I'm much more used to people who tend to hold differences against one another. Some who even used it to justify some pretty terrible things. Just living together sounds like a nice change of pace.

No, usually I'm the one holding doors for them and helping them across the roads. I'm sure it was just a one-off.

And yeah, I get it. Most worlds have sort of issue along the same lines. But I can safely say there hasn't been a lot of that with the riftfarers in general here on the leviathans.

[A beat.] But now that I think about it... Some of the deepwater merfolk can get aggressive towards us.

It's a fairly poor one, in my estimation.

They branded us all, a while back. To keep one side from interacting with the other. Not to mention, there were a group of Paladins behind a bunch of kidnappings happening at the same time.

Almost all of them have been pretty nice to me. There's some tribes that are a bit...different, but I don't think I've ever noticed them treating me different because I was a rift-farer. They just treated me different because I wasn't from their island.

Clearly, your first mistake was thinking they need help in the first place. [ Maybe he shouldn't joke like that... Zack seems like a good guy so far. ]

As far as you know, did anything prompt the merfolk?

You don't just mean the normal tattoos do you? Wish I could say I'm surprised regardless. An institution may be founded by sound ideas but it's still populated by men.

As for what prompted the merfolk... Well, the ones down in the deeper waters are pretty damn territorial, so I'm guessing it has something to do with them wanting to keep their space their own.

Sounds more like typical provincial politics. Have you encountered any that are better off being avoided?

There was an island with a volcano and snail people. A sect of them belonged to a cult and they were trying to sacrifice people. I would stay away from them.

As is their right. If they want to be left alone, we should respect their wishes. As long as they're not causing trouble outside their territory.
