[FIRST: You get a very close shot of Lashan's eye as she squints at her shellphone. We have here that double-doozy of a medieval and an old person and while she's pretty sharp, these devices are not intuitive to her.]
'S it working? The bead's glowing.
[aka 'the light's on'. The video pulls back a bit but like, it's still pretty close and the angle is unflattering. This whole thing feels completely unnatural to her and the lines between her brows are deepened in a frown.]
I'm Sister Lashan. I'm a lay sister, not a nun. I've made some charms for waterproofing. They're not well-tested though. If you help me with that I'll give you one. Want to know their tolerances and if I have to tweak anything before I start selling them. I'm on Elrut.
[yeah this has made her feel ridiculous and stilted. She prods at the phone with a finger.]
...How do I- [she found out how to end message! this was Not guaranteed.]

[Not until more recently back home and then ending up here that he saw any other humans besides being one himself, surrounded by seraphim, elemental spirits in his village that took him in as a baby. He does smile, though, holding up his copy of a book, the Celestial Record, as one example of a book for her. She seems to have some idea on them at least but he figures to show her.]
But yeah! Books! They have stories, notes, or pictures in them, bound together with usually leather or something similar for a cover to protect them. If your charms could help protect my journal, I'd love one! I could pay you or something. You deserve something for this.

[Other humans, huh.]
I know what books are, kid. It's more that a manuscript is incredibly expensive. It takes months to make them, longer if you incorporate how long it takes to make the parchment, and having even one's a mark of a lot of wealth and power. [Her Enclave has a little scriptorium where some of her Sisters reproduce manuscripts to sell, but it's grueling work. She worries that they'll have to do more of it without the income she contributes.] Paper's cheaper, from the sound of it.
Are you looking to have a shelf or a chest protected, or just this journal? I etched the cover of Sherlock's paper book. That should hold it against being splashed or dropped in the water, anyway.

[Sorey gives a nod at what she says. Because that isn't untrue. Even back home.]
You're not wrong. Most of what I've focused on was history, specifically ruins. So, a lot of the writings and art were on walls, not so much on paper. I want to look after the books I have. So they're protected. Especially being on ships and all. If you could help with that? It might not be perfect, but it would at least be something. It's better than nothing like I have now. I wasn't sure how much you could charm. I mean, how big it would be? You could do a chest itself that would work for whatever was inside? Or a shelf?

Hmmm. A chest sounds good in that it's enclosed, but a shelf is for ones you'd reach for more often, isn't it? And there's a limit to how dry a paper book could be since eventually the leather would come to pieces, so maybe being open to the air would be better. [she's thinking aloud.]
Mind you, after I die anything I enchant is only good for another use or so before it wears off. I don't know how that'd work with vanishing.

But ah, that's fine. It's good to note and keep in mind, but hopefully, that won't necessarily need to be something we have to worry about.
[Look. She is older. Sure. But so was Gramps, and he was still around? Of course, Sorey's sense of age might be well skewed with having been raised among the seraphim who live for so much longer than mortals.]
no subject
Heh, I'm not dead yet! From the sound of things not a lot of people are gonna be here long enough for that to be an issue.
no subject
[Sorey shrugs at that, running a hand through his hair at the back.]
We can't be sure how long we might end up here.

Hm. Let's see... [Lashan is quite savvy with money. This currency is unfamiliar to her, but she's picked up on a lot since arrival - she knows how much laborers of various degrees of skill are paid, how much a meal costs at different eating-houses versus component parts of the same meal in the market, rent. There are still a lot of unknowns, and she has to balance being a cautious soul who wants to have a lot of resources on hand just in case versus being a businesswoman who knows about building reputation. Plus she has no idea how much Sorey has to spend.
She names a tidy sum which has a lot of factors involved that I am just not gonna get and raises her eyebrows, wondering if he'll try and haggle.]
You say the chest isn't so big, but I wouldn't want to haul something so unwieldy too far, if I was you. Ruins your back. [She believes it's never too early to start taking care of your back.] Where are you?
no subject
[Sorey is a country bumpkin. Does not even think to question the price. Or to negotiate or haggle. He just assumes she knows more than him about the work that does go into these charms or the like so he trusts her to have a better idea on the effort that goes into it, how much it would cost.]
no subject
The price is not ruinous, but it's not nothing either. Lashan wonders if she should have said a higher number. It's fine, she doesn't think she's about to starve.]
It works. I assume you're operating off of a ship? If water's a risk. I've heard that if this beast dives things are fine.
[dubious]

[In keeping his things safe. The important things at least. Hence the asking about getting a chest protected, just in case.]

So we could meet somewhere near the docks. [she is afraid of the ocean but not to the point of being unable to handle the sight of it.] I'd need a surface to put this chest on and a little time.

[Mid was also quite a character. Both he was fond of.]
That works. I can meet you there at the docks with the chest. Let me know when to meet you and I can bring it out.

[do you want to set a scene?]
