No. Those echoes - shards, we call them - were created as a means to imprison the god we had summoned to keep our star safe from calamity. Our god was deemed too powerful and the sundering was intended to keep His power in check.

Of course, those who live on each shard object quite vehemently when they learn their deaths are imminent. They cannot remember nor comprehend what they once were.

Their fragments return to the aetherial sea and wil eventually rejoin the original. The original is none the wiser for it. But to one like me who can perceive the difference, their soul would appear to grow denser with each Rejoining. 'Tis something better explained visually I think, if you wish to understand the natural cycle of my star.

Very well.

[ He switches the video feed on, finally revealing his face. Dressed in a waistcoat and shirt, he looks almost unremarkable save for the wing of white in his hair and the 'pearl' in his forehead. A snap of his fingers conjures a hovering miniature of what is clearly a habitable planet together with a humanoid shape. ]

When a living creature is born, the star grants it a soul from the aetherial sea - the Underworld, as I know it. [ A small orb of light rises out of the planet and goes into the humanoid shape's breast. ] Then when the creature dies, this soul returns to the star, and to the Underworld. [ The orb rises out of the humanoid and goes back to the planet as its form withers. ]

However, my star has been sundered into fourteen shards: the Source and thirteen reflections of it. The people's souls, once whole and dense, are now a fraction of what they originally were.

[ A flash of light hits the planet and it multiplies itself accordingly, forming a ring of translucent copies. The humanoid shapes notably now have a variety of features representing the various races of the modern world. They, too, are faded compared to the original. ]

I'll spare you the details of the Rejoinings themselves. When they occur, however, the copies...collapse, I suppose you could say, into the Source.

[ Seven of the faded copies burn, freeze, crackle, wither, and are sucked into the Source which grows brighter and more defined with each one. ]

That is all there is to it. The cycle of life and death remains forcibly separate for each shard until it is rejoined to the Source.
