[ Hello again, Escordvi. It is Emet-Selch, sitting at his desk in the cabin on the Phantom Moon. ]

Firstly, my thanks to those who left gifts for me during the local celebrations. I would return the favour but only one of you left a name. If you desire a gift yourself, I've left them with my assistant at the Adamantine Forge.

...Now, to business.

[ He clears his throat. ]

The Raiders of the Lost Arts welcomes all who have a keen interest in exploration, discovery, and research whether that be for esoteric relics or more mundane interests. I am currently its acting captain until such time as our original captain returns - if he does, indeed, return. Our ship, the Phantom Moon, has ample space for your needs and will be docked at Eltrut for a week or so whilst our new arrivals find their feet. Do come find myself or one of the crew should you be interested. Your assigned armada matters not to us.

[ He snaps his fingers and faintly shimmering, translucent faces of the current crew - Professor Turo, Ryotaro Dojima, and Reno - appear. ]

--And if you happen to be interested in magitech research and development, the Adamantine Forge can be found on the same leviathan, away from the main docks.

I had thought to merely respect you keeping a distance. Why you didn't think to simply hand it to me with the other party present is beyond me.

[ Don't bring this out in him, Emet-Selch. ]

That other boy seems to be a nice fellow. Too nice for his own good. I thought it would be a shame to embarrass him.

[ Also...he still remembers what happened a few months ago... ]

He is, aye. Sometimes I fear he is too good for one such as myself. I am quite thankful and blessed for his continued presence in my life.

Though Zack absolutely should be embarrassed from time to time.

Hmm, well, if you say so. Then the next time I have cause to give you a gift, I shall choose a most inopportune time for the both of you.

The question here is who would be embarrassed more?

[ Honestly? Likely him. Very likely him. ]

Zack might say or do something that could make heads turn.

So... There is a festival known as "Valentione's Day", yes? That seems like a wonderful opportunity to develop your relationship.

I recall this, yes. Though why are you interested in our, ah, developing relationship?

[ Does Emet-Selch not know how deep it already goes? ]

[Curious. He did not know that Emet-Selch had been taking over for his crew, even if temporarily...]

Although I am already with another crew, as I'm sure you're aware about, I wouldn't mind offering a hand if you might need it.

Perhaps as a contact of sorts?

[He's not sure if he can be part of two crews at once but he can certainly help and go with them if that's ever required. He wants to do more.]

That is kind of you but 'tis mostly ship maintenance that I am concerned about. I could hardly ask you to perform such menial labour.

Much of the earlier crew have either vanished or left for another ship. I think those left are content to be left to their own devices but someone has to make practical considerations. There is also our base of operations to consider...

I see. Of course.

[Yes, ship maintenance isn't something he would be able to help with much.]

I think it's important that you do make those considerations. It would be a shame to lose the progress your crew has made, others having left or not.

[He agrees that Emet-Selch should keep things in working order.]

Yet, please do remember that I do have a fair bit of free time on my hands now that I am free of ... certain burdens. If I can be of any help in any capacity, please do not hesitate in asking.

[ He thinks for a moment. They have hired hands to help with sailing and keeping the exterior in working condition, but thus far the vacant rooms are left to accumulate dust. Emet-Selch thinks the occasional blast of wind is perfectly fine but what about the floating garden...? ]

If you like, you could help the Professor maintain the garden from time to time. Our ship tows one at its rear. He and I take turns keeping an eye on it currently. If nothing else, 'tis a nice spot for some peace and quiet.

A garden that is towed behind your ship? What an interesting addition. While I wouldn't say I'm much of a green thumb, I wouldn't mind helping with it from time to time.

[He can do some simple gardening. And it would be a nice place to visit.]

You are welcome to visit. I'm not sure why our captain decided to add such a cumbersome thing but, well, I cannot simply let it wither now, can I?

[ Joshua just has to avoid killing the plants. How hard could it be, really? Don't answer that. ]

Ah, and I suppose the others won't mind if you wish to use the laboratory to research anything which catches your eye. 'Twould be a shame for the facilities to go to waste.

Perhaps your captain took a liking to gardening. I can't fault him for that, seeing as we're all out to sea more often than not.

[He chuckles a bit. Honestly, nothing tastes better than home-grown herbs and fruits, too. He couldn't care less about the vegetables, though.]

And I wouldn't mind taking a look if you're offering. Do you know what he might have been researching before?

No. Much of our crew is quite independent and I never bothered to enquire too deeply into his work since he held himself rather aloof.

[ Emet-Selch appreciates it honestly. Even if their island base feels a bit desolate without much activity. It would be nice to have someone with an active spirit for exploring... ]

You can use it for whatever you wish. Don't mind the others if you see them there. There's room for several to work at their own benches.

I keep hearing the term magitech being thrown around. But what is it?

Magitech is the fusion of magic and technology. A heater, for example, which uses crystals instead of heating filaments.

I see, so it's using an alternate form of energy to power objects?

[emet_sulk]

Hmm, you could say so. Assuming you come from a land which already has an established energy source. However, though magic can be a source of energy, it isn't typically used as such.

I suppose I should ask first: does your world have magic?

We do have multiple sources of energy, and different ways to produce it. But magic is...

...I suppose there's a form of it? I'm not certain if I would necessarily call any of it magic, but it does have a habit of entering into the unexplained for me. A majority of our energy production comes from items known as Wisdom Cubes, as well as oil, coal, and gas combustion, and various forms of clean energy production.

[ That sounds a little complicated. Emet-Selch frowns a little, thinking, before he speaks again. ]

What I call magic here is the common shorthand for what I personally know as 'aether'. Aether is a fundamental force - both material and immaterial - which governs all aspects of my star. A living creature can use this aether and shape it per their will. The easiest manifestation of this would be spellcasting. 'Magic'. That which I refer to as magitech is a combination of this force with practical engineering. So, rather than build a thing that operates on the principles of physical laws, it uses magic to produce the same effect.

[ Another pause, before he offers this: ] 'Tis like the difference between a gun and a mage's staff.

I see... that doesn't sound to dissimilar to some of the things we can do back home. [If with extra steps added to it and maybe not with as great as an effect.]

Then what sort of machines do you use it for?

[emet_sulk]

Anything, really. Vehicles, manufacturing, home comforts... Magitech does not mean that magic becomes obsolete. After all, it all springs from the same source.

The only concern one may have is the over-usage of a single element. That would cause aetheric imbalance.
