[ There's no video feed here and even the audio quality isn't great. It's like there's a degree of interference. And then comes Cloud's grunt. ]

[ Well Cloud sure hopes so! ]

[ Well it seems to go quiet on his end... Is that a good thing. Or... ]

[What the hell is this? Zack hits reply via video right away. Something about this feels wrong. Really wrong.]

Cloud?! Hey, Cloud!? What the hell are you saying? Where are you? Someone took your materia?!

[ He can't really hear him all too clearly and he's had to turn the volume down. ]

I don- know wh-re I --. B-d singal.

[This is bad.]

Cloud! You're breaking up, I can't hear you!?

[... Bad signal??]

What do you see around you right now?! Cloud!

[ He tries to turn on the video feed. It's snowy. Barely visible. But shapes of bars can be made out. Maybe stone in the background? The connection is very, very bad. ]

Probably somwh-re de--p un--gr--. It's --mp and co-d.

[The connection is so bad that Zack can't make anything out that's noteworthy. Just some snow and shapes of bars... He's outside on an island that still has snow on it? Underground? A cage? What the hell is going on here.]

What the hell... Hang in there, Cloud! ... I'll find you.

[He's probably not going to be able to do this on his own. He'll try and contact Tifa.]

[ He's definitely being held somewhere that's deep enough underground that the signal is bad. Maybe a cellar? A dungeon? Cave system? It's really hard to tell.

It returns to audio only and Zack can probably hear Cloud kicking at the bars. ]

I'll -- f-ne. [ So Cloud thinks. ] K--p Ni--na c-lm.

[ He's worried about her going all darkness dragon on them. ]

[Zack's frustration and worry grows by the second. On one hand, he's glad that he can actually hear Cloud in some capacity. That means he's okay. ... In some capacity.]

What? Are you okay? You're not hurt?

[...]

I'm going to call Tifa, first. Don't worry.

[Might have to try and repeat that part about a certain pink daughter. Or hope that Zack has enough sense to remember her temper.]

[ Look, it's just as frustrating for him. He promises. ]

K--p Nimona ca-m. [ Because she will be worried. ] Do-'t do anyth-ng r-ckl-ss.

[ That's all of you. Zack, Nimona, Tifa. Anyone. They all need to remember to not do anything that will get themselves hurt. ]

Nimona... Damn it.

[Now it clicks into place. If Cloud is somewhere in danger, then Nimona is sure to run off to try and find him. Probably in some sort of massive dragon form, too.]

I'll watch her, don't worry.

[... He can't really promise any of them won't do anything reckless, though. It's Cloud. It's their Cloud.]

Just hang in there.

[ All Zack will hear is an affirmative before a breaking sound. Looks like he might have gotten something loose. ]

[ It's not a secret that he's been trying to take down all of the people in this illegal business, after all. ]

[Zack has an inkling what this is all about, too. Although, Zack isn't sure about all the details... And it's hard to get what Cloud knows out of him right now thanks to how broken up the call is.

The connection is going to get worse from here on out. Zack won't be able to respond after that.]

Cloud? Cloud! What did you say about the corsairs?!

[... The line goes dead.]

( huh?

while karlach isn't the most technologically adept, she knows a distress signal when she hears it.

she speaks loud into her phone, hoping to be heard. )

Cloud! Hey! Are you alright—?!

[ Speaking louder doesn't really do anything for signal issues, but thank you for trying. There might even be a static-laced huff. He's heard Karlach's voice anyway. ]

Yeah. I'm --- hurt or an--th-ng. Go-ng to try t- f-nd a --- out.

( the problem with the static is that karlach can't really make out what he's trying to say. it's a little too broken up, cutting in and out. was cloud hurt or not?

karlach feels a little like she can't breathe. )

You're not hurt, right? NOT HURT? Gods, if they hurt you, Bright Eyes—

( fire is already in her throat, hot with anger. )

You got any idea where you are? Who took you?

( it's hard to tell how much will get through, but karlach hopes if she talks enough that'll help fill in the blanks. )

[ Of course this works both ways. Cloud can't really make out everything that she's saying either. He sighs, running a hand through his hair. They're all worried about him. Cloud's not sure that they should be? ]

No. I'm not h-rt. Ju-t ou- of -t.

[ Cloud's just a little light headed from whatever they must have used to get him down for the count. ]

Don't kn-w wh-re I am r-ght now though. Going to tr- -- br--k out.

( karlach breathes a small sigh of relief. she cannot hear everything, but she can at least hear cloud confirm that he's not hurt. she's far less worried about him if that's the case. cloud is still another soldier. )

OK, OK, OK, OK.

( repeated to make sure one should get through. )

[ It's still staticky. But there's a shout. Cursing. Multiple voices.

Sounds like Cloud might have been caught! ]

( the connection cuts before karlach can shout anything worthwhile at her shellphone. she'd only just gotten a taste of relief before it feels like fire racing through her veins, alight with fury.

she shoves her shellphone away into her pack and goes to grab one of her axes instead. someone more intelligent that her could probably use it to better pinpoint cloud's location, but karlach has never done things that way.

karlach prefers the way of the most violence.

time to go find hot legs. )

[ Oh boy oh boy... Somebody is not a happy shapeshifting daughter. "K--p Ni--na c-lm."

She's calm, alright. Super calm! Her dad has just been kidnapped, and she's not going to turn into the shadow dragon again.

I'm definitely gonna break stuff, there will be no trying.

[ Nimona knows that's not what he was trying to say, but that's her promise. ]

[ That doesn't sound like Nimona keeping calm. Out of all of the people he is concerned about with this, it's Nimona. ]

[ Still being a "dad" even now. ]

[ It's not a shadow dragon kind of angry and upset, though. That's the important thing. ]

I'm gonna be the one dishing out hurt. And I won't get caught.

[ Does that count? ]

[ That's sounding a lot like reckless behavior! Don't do anything without sticking by Zack or Tifa, please? ]

Dad. I've lived this long without getting into too much trouble.

[ Okay, she's going to be good at sneaking around and going unnoticed during the search. Then totally gonna be sticking close to them during the rescue. ]

[ And now it just breaks off entirely. Static. The sound of Cloud's voice. All of it. Dead. Gone. ]

[ Nimona grips her shellphone so tightly that it almost cracks the screen with the pressure. She presses her forehead against it, like that will make any difference. This is the first time she's been in this situation, her adopted family just gone - taken to who knows where, and who knows what happening to him.

All her years, she's only had one dad... and she hates everything about this. ]

I'm going to find you, and make whoever took you pay for it. I promise.

[ The message doesn't get delivered, but maybe that's for the best - because her voice is shaky with complicated emotions, with an edge of danger to it. ]

Cloud?!

[Ven doesn't really like the sounds of that. He can't quite make out what Cloud is saying either.]

[ Small blonde child is worrying now too. Great. Lovely day, today. ]

[ Sounds like Ventus. But he and Roxas sound... Similar? ]

Yeah, it's me! Are you okay?!

[Isn't it such a great, lovely day?]

[ And then Ventus can hear some kicking in the background. Cloud likely kicking the bars. ]

That’s not really reassuring.

[ There's a loud bang! A crack! Sounds like maybe he's broken through. ]

[ He's got this Ventus. ]

Fine, but if you're there too long, I'm going to come find you.

[And you can't stop him!]

[ Cloud doesn't have a problem with that. Mostly. ]

[ Because that's the part that Cloud wonders about. He has no idea where he is. So how could anyone else know? ]
