[Now that? That draws a long, exaggerated laugh from Eggman.]

Why do you think I persist, Surge? Because I have a goal. Victory. Complete and total victory. On my terms. What do Sonic and Tails do after they win? What does the Restoration do? They rebuild. They set all of their little dominoes back up and go back to their pedantic little lives. They go on vacations and trips. They have little races and parties. They set the game board and they wait. Wait for me to come back and knock it all down again.

Your hatred of Sonic and Tails should extend so much further. And why? Because they adhere to principles and beliefs that put them strictly at odds with the necessities of their survival. In fact, I daresay that only a handful of you furballs actually understand the meaning of consequence.

[Shadow, Espio, anyone who wishes to act with any sort of finality. They're the ones Eggman has difficulty manipulating. Fortunately, there are those who won't give in to their baser urges.]

Let me define for you what a 'hero' should be, Surge. A hero makes sacrifices. They sacrifice their mind, their body, their principles for the sake of the greater good. A hero is someone who will throw themselves away, break themselves apart piece by piece to fulfill a goal. Because the needs of the many...well, you know the rest.

My point? Don't be a hero. Heroes don't get things done. Heroes play boardgames and wait around for their next opportunity to shine in the spotlight. They gather their praise and disappear again.

[In all of that, Eggman never once answered if what he does will make him happy. Because he knows it won't. Happiness is ephemeral. When he triumphs— and he will triumph— the satisfaction will be a brief high. Then, it's on to the next ambition. There must always be something bigger. Greater. Because there is a void in his heart that he struggles to fill with forced acknowledgement. And when his enemies aren't there to acknowledge him...]

[Well...it's easy to make enemies.]

Be better, Surge. I can show you how.
