[ Anyone who happens to have one of Hawks' feathers, either because he gifted it, or they just happened to pick one up, will find that three days ago they darkened a shade or two as the connection to the man himself was cut off - they are now disconnected feathers, and would need to be replaced sometime in the future, if one still wanted one. ]

Hello! Sorry to trouble everyone, but I need a favour.

I'm on Eltrut, and I need a ride to either my crew's island or out to their ship, or something. It's not a rush, but if someone's willing to make the trip I can help out with chores on board, or even pay you if you get me back to my place.

[ Hawks has never, outside of MANTA board requests, set foot on a ship willingly for any length of time, in fact, usually he's flying where he wants to go.]

More than ink, yep. I need time.

[ It's not that hard to find Hawks, although the room is pretty quiet. 'No wings' didn't really cut it for the description. Hawks is covered in bandages around his face, his arms and his torso, right to his waistband. He's wearing an oxygen mask, and fortunately he's as comfortable as he's going to get, lying on his stomach with a pillow tucked under his head. His phone is in his hand right nearby. A thin blanket has been draped over him. He really was thinking he needed rest, he just didn't have a good plan to accomplish that, his mind wasn't exactly working at maximum efficiency in this state. At least he's been given painkillers and rebandaged up. ]

"Ah, geeze, they really put you through the ringer."

[Axel's voice permeates the dark of the room before he steps in from the shadows.

He may have sparred with Hawks, but he still hasn't really seen the Hero fight. What could have laid him low to this degree? The assassin had been prepared to see some level of injury, but not this. He's about to say something more when he notices the oxygen mask and thinks better of it. He returns to his phone.]

Can you even speak?

[ He nods a little bit at the comment, he definitely was put through the ringer on this one. ]

Barely. Smoke inhalation. [ Which might explain just about everything Axel needs to know, as a fire user himself. ]

I'd say you should see the other guy, but I didn't get much of a hit on him. Bad match up.

[Axel nods. 'Bad match up', smoke inhilation, burns. It paints an ugly picture.]

Your job?

[Axel nearly debates saying it so bluntly, especially in text, where his whispers would leave a trail behind. Hawks had been so concerned about stepping out of company line. It's not as if Hawks wouldn't be texting in reply, though. Any response one gave would likely be obvious even without the other half of the conversation.

And maybe, just maybe. Axel would be happy to get caught, if it meant he could teach these miscreants a lesson.]

[ It's an ugly picture, the damage is gruesome, the pain inflicted was at the maximum. Dabi wanted him to feel every bit of it. ]

Not the Commission. They never would've left me disfigured and lowered my marketability. Especially with the scarring on my face. They all died in the conflict though, so they're not a problem anymore.

[ Great news for him, not so great for anyone else. ]

I was with my mission target and I got interrupted by one of the other members. I underestimated his threat level to me. Obviously.

"Happens." [Axel shrugs, confident in his nonchalance being far more convincing than any displays of pity he could give. There's little he can do and even less reason to know the specifics. He abandons typing responses in favor of speech. After being cooped up in the dark and quiet, Hawks would probably prefer his voice for distraction. Axel would.]

"But hey, guess you can finally get to those hobbies then."

[No more worry on who is watching now.]

[ Fortunately Hawks does not desire pity. This is just an occupational hazard to him. Heroes get hurt, it's in the job description. While he does feel the weight of his mistakes, there's no forthcoming punishment. There isn't anyone there to boss him around.

He lets out a wheezing sound and his eyes crinkle, betraying his amusement at that. ]

Considering I'm grounded for the forseeable future, you might be right about that.

[Heh. He caught that smile.]

"Course I'm right."

[Axel smirks, leaning casually against the bed, as if this were a regular hangout spot.]

"So what have you landed on? Knitting? Surfing? Candlestick making? I've thought about cooking, myself."

[ He looks like he's thinking that over, that or he's tired. Fortunately it's the former because his finger taps away at the shellphone again. ]

I don't know. I'm not a reader, I don't think I would enjoy it, since it's too closely associated to work. I don't even know how to start cooking.

[ Hawks watches Axel, but he appreciates that he's there. It's really boring to lie around in bed. ]

"That makes two of us."

[He slumps in defeat. Man, he's gonna have to ask the network at this rate and he really doesn't want to.]

"Unfortunately, reading might be the first step to a lot of those."

[Sorry Hawks, turns out you're not the only one a little stumped when it comes to civillian life]

"So what's the deal with picking this place to recover at? I mean, I know you're part bird and all.."

[It's half said in jest but half not. That can't be it, right? Wouldn't a normal clinic have sufficed?]

[ Another wheeze of a laugh. ]

Got me there.

[ Because Axel is totally right, if he's going to learn something it will probably have to come from a book or someone teaching him. He knows that Richie reads novels, but that's not really for him. His eyes betray his amusement at the question. ]

Chris realized that when I asked about going on a ship something was wrong and came to get me. Both them and Richie are looking after me. It's as good a place as any in the end, since I can't fly back to my place.

"So they picked it."

[Despite the slightly accusatory tone something in Axel lights up at the news. Chris and Richie, that's the first time he's heard Hawks mention anyone else. Did the reclusive hero actually finally make friends?]

"This place is a preserve right?"

[Probably not great that he broke in so easy. Though the assassin imagines actually getting near the lands beyond the building would be much harder.]

"Maybe if you're lucky you'll see something interesting from your window."

[ He nods, but unlike Axel, he's not terribly upset about it. Now that he's gotten some semblance of rest, his mind is clearing up and he was not thinking straight when he arrived. He can admit that. ]

Something like that. They look after sick and wounded animals. Usually I'm a guard, not a patient.

[ He's kidding. ]

I'll be able to walk around in a day or two, I can go out and look at the animals, or follow Richie around or something. Hopefully.

[ Hawks is in rough shape, really, this is by far the worst injury he's suffered in his storied history. ]

I'm just glad the wings will come back.

"Guard? Then this is a place of work for you."

[A noise of understanding. That makes more sense. Should have led with that, silly! Axel nods, a little more somber.]

"They'll be back before ya know it."

[His wings. Even if Hawks knows it, sometimes it just needs to be said by someone else. Just as Axel ought to tell Hawks not to push it, that he probably shouldn't be on his feet that soon again, but the assassin knows the difference on which to voice. The hero will do as he will regardless. Axel is sure of that.]

"I should probably leave you to that beauty rest if you're planning to get up to all that excitement, then."

[He stretches, unable to help but pause.]

"..Y'need anything?"

[ It is a place for work for him, but it's the easiest job he's ever had to chase poachers away. He smiles and shakes his head a little bit. Does that hurt? Yeah, but it's fine. Pain he can handle. ]

No, I'm good. I'll sleep. Thanks for coming to check on me.

"Anytime." [Axel murmurs, absentmindedly righting any fabric that shifted from the subtle movement.]

"You know I'm just a call away and I probably got even less going on than you do."

[Regardless of whether that is true or not he'll make it true in the moment, if Hawks calls for him. The Nobody owes the hero that much.]

"It's good to see you again."

[ His smile is in his eyes and he nods and closes them. He'll reconnect with Axel again soon. He's glad to see him again, circumstances aside. They always get along in some way and that makes him think they might be friends.

He'll think about that later. ]
