Warnings: The worst book club ever, talk of eldritch horrors, potential poking at the 4th wall for Sherlock

I made the purchase of ‘Encyclopedia Necronomica’ earlier but had not the opportunity to make a study of it until now. Having done so, I must ask: who is familiar with the entity pictured here? What do you know?

I shall include photographs from the book and of my sketches in reference to imagery related to my world.

Furthermore, if anyone else wishes to reference or compare this book with entities encountered recently, I am at your disposal.

[ Sherlock had some sense of mind to not study this particular book while feverish and ill. He should be praised for that, honestly, because he spotted something frightening familiar when he finally did.

I also found a copy of this book, but I haven't really sat down with it yet. Learned anything useful?

Don't think I've ever seen that entity in particular. Might not be that out of place back home, though. Seen plenty of water Angels.

It does not, though I have heard a strange utterance of something by people brainwashed by their captors. I could not understand it at the time.

However, not knowing the name does not mean they are not one and the same. Tell me more.

Perhaps? I unfortunately only know of the being using terms like the "Great Lord," "The One," and "all-seeing master."

Yes. Most strange animals such as that are some kind of Angel, back home.

[ There's a bit more context; he named it after a particular Angel, because that one had... multiple dog faces, too. But he's not sure he should actually try to explain the sentinel. It would make the name less cute. ]

Are they also considered messengers of the gods?

I am lead to believe that this entity is the god in question, slumbering in the ocean and waiting to be awoken to destroy everything.

You found people captive? Or was this something you ran into back where you're from?

[Concerning, but less so than if it was happening here. Tentacles in the ocean sort of made sense. That's where tentacle beasts live!]

[Other places though...]

Powerful, ancient mage back in Thedas. [He will not say "god". He can't even really say the species anymore.] Really - really fond of using tentacles instead of hands. Or fingers.

This is partly in relation to a case I investigated back home, before I came here in fact. To awaken this great god, a man captured people from all over the world, brainwashed or hypnotized them to be mindless and uttering that intelligible phrase, and then sacrificed their lives. My partner and I were able to stop the ritual and thus the god from waking.

The images shown are of the god, not the man doing the ritual.

I believe this to be the god that the cultist leader back in my world wanted to awaken, abducting hundreds upon hundreds as sacrifices.

knowledge of what? For certainly there are kernels of wisdom to be gained through madness, but only a scholar with more cruelty and arrogance than sense would ever seek it out, much less pay for it with the blood of others.

You say this book depicts a creature much like this god?

[ There are kernels of wisdom to be gained through madness? That... that is honestly news to Sherlock who thinks madness is the end, the eventual fate to his existence. ]

He related himself to Icarus, burning and melting his wax wings as he flew too close to the sun, but claimed himself happy.

He also said it wasn't the first time another him and another me had crossed paths. I had never met him before, but he knew me.

And this book does have such a similar depiction. I would not make this post otherwise.

Perhaps he knew you in another samsara, but that doesn't excuse his actions or the pain he inflicted. So what if he knew you? No matter what he gained, the way he gained it is wrong.

Scholars who seek a connection with divinity exist in Sumeru too. But they do so in meditation and contemplation in the jungles, not with blood sacrifice!

Kaveh, I do not agree with him. Watson and I stopped him, nearly dying ourselves and not knowing if we'd survive in the very end.

However, that does not eliminate the fact that there are people who will think those blood sacrifices are acceptable. We've already seen it in this world with other cultists.

I would hope most people would, but such cruelty exists when it means their own gain.

I do not know if the book is available any longer. It seemed to be a limited run, but I am willing to allow others to read my copy if they wish to compare the entries.

This is more a reference book. I have seen an occult text which contained the needed rituals and directions within. That is not what this is.

Even a reference could be dangerous, if there is enough to be extrapolated from...

...Forgive me. I've never seen a god that looks anything so...cephalopod-esque, but I know very well how badly things can go when man tries to call forth the divine themselves. I'm concerned what that could do, in a world as unstable as this one.

I would happily live never seeing the image of this god again. Unfortunately, I cannot rid him from my mind so easily.

Given that the Great Lord sleeps under the waters, such a god could be anywhere if he is indeed here.

Well that's... that's something. Stopping it's definitely something. I'm just a little surprised there's another crazy god out there with tentacles.

Are you familiar the Naughilust? It is a leviathan with tentacles, and with the role leviathans play in this world, we may be able to classify it as god-like at the very least.

[ There has to be a good reason for Sherlock to step foot on that leviathan, and it often involves him needing outside support until he can no longer see what he walks on. Astares might be more of stretch to consider it having tentacles. Cassiopea... that might definitely be a god but so unfathomable as such for its supposed vastness. ]

[ They don't often deliver coherent messages, but they do theoretically follow the (often inscrutable) will of their god. ]

You've encountered this entity before?
