Why Freminet, I’d say your confidence has grown tremendously if you’re making a public declaration like this!

Yes, I suppose so. I just wasn’t sure if I should have done it or not.

But even so, the fact that you did is enough to prove how much you've grown! It's enough cause for celebration as your birthday is! And it's a marvel the two happen to fall on the same day!

...Suddenly, I'm wondering if this was a good idea after all.

Whatever do you mean? Of course it's a good idea! Why wouldn't people want to know when to celebrate your birthday or send you well-wishes?

Yes, I do but...

[mumble mumble mumble]

Not in a grand kind of way.

That's fair. I know the grand spectacle isn't your style, and that's perfectly understandable. But I'd like to think that just for one day, you'd enjoy a tiny bit of surprise on the day of your birth, wouldn't you say? Who knows what might come knocking at your door.

[And as if to emphasize his point, there's a sudden knock on Freminet's door. What could that be??]

[And at that moment, Freminet couldn't help but flinch at the knock. He knew this was coming and yet, it surprised him anyway. Regardless, he gave a sigh and walked straight to the door.]

Somehow, I knew you would do this.

[He said after opening said door.]

[As Freminet opens the door, there's a sudden pop! of a few noise crackers, and brightly coloured confetti erupts around him. It's followed by the bursting forth of a certain hat-wearing cat, from a certain magician's hat. And who's holding that present? Why, who else but Lyney?]

Happy birthday, Freminet~!

[And Freminet should have expected this too. With all the confetti around them, he couldn't help but take a step back and be slightly flustered.]

....Thank you. You didn't have to do that.

I know, but is it so wrong to want to celebrate my dear brother’s birthday with a bit of pizzaz?

[By Lyney’s standards, the display is quite tame; just a couple confetti poppers and Rosseland offering Freminet his present. But it’s still something that is probably too much for Freminet on his own, which Lyney understands. Which is why once the initial surprise has worn off, he smiles brightly, outstretching his hand so Freminet can take the present from Rosseland.]

Go on, take it! It’s for you.

Um...okay?

[He said before taking the gift. Looking back at Lyney and Rosseland and then back at the present, he gave a sigh.]

Thank you. You didn't have to.

[Once the gift is taken, Rosseland meows at Freminet before diving back into Lyney's hat. Lyney puts the hat back on his head with a flourish before grinning at Freminet.]

Of course I did, you're my brother! It wouldn't be very brotherly of me if I didn't get you a gift, now would it?

Even so, you didn't have to.

[But he already knew his family should have done or given him something. Still...]

...But thank you, I really appreciate it. [And you see that? There was a small smile on his face!]

[He sees it, and he beams at it! This is what he hunts for, why he pesters Freminet so much; to see that small smile crest like a shy sunrise.]

It's no problem at all, Freminet! Now, would you like to see what your gift is?

[And then, he looked down at his present before looking back at Lyney.]

Um...what did you give me?

Well, only one way to find out!

[Go on, open it!]

[With that, the moment he opened it....!!!]

Lyney, did you really get me this..?

[Inside the present, it at first looks to be merely a box of metal parts; highly polished metal parts, but empty parts nonetheless. However, tucked into the box is a set of detailed instructions for using the various parts within to make a clockwork bird, complete with a tiny motor to allow it to fly. Lyney beams as he watches Freminet open the box.]

Do you like it? I went to one of the artificers in town and asked them for their opinion on something that you would be able to build. When I told the worker there about your tinkering prowess, she even threw in extra parts for you to add customization options as well. I think she said there's enough for you to make at least three birds to start.

You really didn't have to do all of this.

[Despite knowing that Lyney would have done this anyway, it still made him feel like he didn't deserve any of this. If anything, it made him sink his head further into his shoulders before he continued on mumbling.]

....Now I want to be able to get you something too for you and Lynette's birthday.

[Aw, poor Freminet... Lyney sighs, shaking his head and moving to take a step forward. He moves slow enough for Freminet to signal if he doesn't want the touch, but if allowed, he will move to pat Freminet on the shoulder.]

I know I didn't have to, but I wanted to. You're my brother, and it's your birthday. I want to celebrate the day you were born, because id that day never happened, you wouldn't get the chance to be my younger brother!

[They may have had unfortunate happenings in their respective lives to end up together, but they were able to make it work. Take a tragedy and make something special from it.]

You're allowed to have these moments of nice things, Freminet. Not even Father would take that right from you. And if you want to get me and Lynette something for our birthdays, you're more than welcome to! But don't feel like it's an obligation, okay? I would rather you do so because you want to, not because you feel like you have to.

[After spending so much time here, he gotten used to people patting his head or his shoulders. He wasn't going to say no to any sort of affection. Especially when they were just trying to help him out.]

I still want to because I am grateful for everything you, Lynette, and Father have done for me. Without the Hearth, I'm not sure where I would be. It's not something I want to think about but it worries me sometimes that our family might fall apart someday.

[He knew it was him overthinking things again and yet, the fear still lingers.]

...I want to make sure I do my best to help you and everyone else out.

[Lyney is glad, because he is able to pat Freminet's shoulder and even give a reassuring squeeze that he hopes offers comfort and translates his gratitude towards his younger brother.]

I don't think you understand just how valued you are by us, both here and back at the House of the Hearth. Not only just because of your skills, but just for the sheer virtue of being you. I'm not lying when I say that I couldn't ask for a better younger brother than you, Freminet.

[Even if Freminet is overthinking, Lyney wants to be there to help banish those fears.]

I know sometimes you may not feel it, but trust me when I say you're doing everything and more. And even if we aren't there physically, we're always there in each other's hearts, right?

...You are right, we do keep the memories alive of those who aren't here.

[He should know. There have been quite a few people who have left the place since they arrived. He wasn't sure if he should be envious or not but he still had his family here. Regardless, he kept looking downward and gave a small sigh.]

....But you are too kind. I'm not sure if I could have asked for a better family myself.

And I share the sentiment, Freminet.

[Another squeeze to his shoulders, and if Freminet will allow it, a quick hug. If not, that's ok too.]

So! Do you have any other major plans for your birthday? If not, Lynette and I could treat you to dinner this evening for a birthday meal. I'm sure I can even convince Father to join us!
