Wanted to leave a quick note and thank you to everyone who helped test my little inventions last month. They should be finalized and ready for official public release next month, but as promised those who helped will receive theirs earlier once ready. Just let me know where to send them off or I can contact you for pick up later.

On that note, I wanted to inquire if anyone had any requests or suggestions as to what I, or any other inventor here, should work on. Whether it's improvements or some alternate version of something that already exists here, or perhaps something similar from your own world.

While I am working with magitech, I am more interested in electrical and mechanical engineering, and I'd rather stay away from weaponry unless it's more for defensive or nonlethal use. So anything of that nature will be more my type.

He made them himself, so I have to assume they're important. But it'd be easier to work out a good music player if I could see what he'd done.

I'll see what I can do. I'm starting to understand him a little more so I might have a few ways to improve my chances.

I'll keep tinkering with a music player in the meanwhile. Spincrystals don't seem to be how people record music here but I might be able to manufacture those, too...

How would the spincrystals work? I take it from their name they "spin."

they're spinning disks that produce sound when a needle is run along them. they're named after similar items made with adeptal magic, but since I can't make that, pressing discs is the next best thing.

Interesting. The only way music is stored in my world is through a music roll, with holes punched on paper in a specific sequence to be played by the player. Obviously not quite portable, so hearing a crystal could store sound is honestly baffling.

[Especially with how crystals work in his world.]

...Oh, I think I've heard of something like that used in fontaine?

but crystals are a good choice for this, at least at home. of most natural minerals, they resonate well with sound.

How are the crystals powered?

the way i had to google how phonographs work.

with the adeptal versions, I'm not really sure.

The ones I've messed with, the crystal isn't a power source, but refined down into a sliver to make the needle,
which reads and transmits sound. It's all based on the vibrations, which is why crystal or diamond is used.

So you mean the crystal itself is etched onto to store the music, like the paper of a music roll. Now that's something.

And how big are these crystals then?

A little smaller than a dinner plate, spun into a flat disc.

I don't think I can replicate it here exactly, but pressings can be done with wax, too, even if it's less effective, so I can experiment.

Worth a try. Could see if the locals have anything up their sleeves as well. I haven't really looked at their music, but I'd be surprise if they haven't come up with a method yet.

I suppose I should have asked around about it first. If the shellphones are any indication, the technology here is far more advanced than what I'm used to.

Given the number of riftfarers that pass through this world and it being going on for quite a while, I wouldn't be so surprised.

Doesn't mean there can't be improvements. Also possible the idea is there, but no one has been able to crack it yet with the resources available here.

Looking into what they can do is at least a good starting point to seeing what's available to me. I've wanted an excuse to investigate the shellphones for a while, so maybe I'll start there.

And I'll look to the shops and music specialists, see what they have. I know I've heard music playing here and there that wasn't from someone else, so there's surely something.

It's something you could ask Alhaitham to look into as well. he enjoys music well enough it's something he'll probably agree to do.
