[ In a rare display, Emet-Selch opts to appear in person. This is important enough to warrant an appearance, he thinks.
The backdrop appears to be a cabin on a ship somewhere. He fills most of the screen so there's not much of significance to be gleaned from it. His posture is relaxed, fingers interlaced loosely before him on the table that his shellphone sits upon. ]
Greetings, one and all.
I and Rem Tokimiya of the Raiders of the Lost Arts are seeking engineers to assist with the development of an engine. 'Tis past time we made a concerted effort to develop one. Inevitable, I would say, as this world has progressed to magical trinkets. We have examined schematics of an old pirate ship and seek to eventually put it to practical use to improve the fleets of both paladins and corsairs.
[ He pauses. It looks as though he wants to add something but he seems to think better of it. ]
Send word to either myself or Rem if you are interested in contributing to the work. While an engine capable of powering a ship is our eventual goal, 'twill be enough to make something on a smaller scale for now - such as heaters for winter or automatic fans for summer.

Aye, I can see and hear you just fine. And you are...?

[ Seems like a safe assumption for a display name like "emet-sulk." ] I am a friend of Rem Tokimiya's. She recommended I get in contact with you regarding the engine schematics you mentioned.

I see. We recovered them from a deceased pirate captain's hoard. It took much negotiating to convince his widower to allow us to keep a copy. Forsaking the reward, relinquishing the relics that came with it...
[ He trails off, letting a few beats of silence speak for him before he shrugs. ]
I would like to know one thing first: what do you hope for from the invention of this engine?
no subject
Admittedly, this not the first question Zelda expected to ask; she assumed he'd be more interested in her skills or credentials. Well, no matter, the answer she gives is a natural one she doesn't need to think on. ]
Ideally, innovation that will allow for greater development of this world's magitech as a whole. Based on what I was able to glean from the schematics, this design is unprecedented in this world and thus offers the potential for significant improvement in current technologies overall. I seek no patent or profit for myself, only the opportunity to contribute to the betterment of this world and hopefully to increase my own knowledge in the process.

Very good. I don't plan on offering monetary compensation else I'd attract all sorts of opportunistic rascals. Our reward shall be the satisfaction of furthering this world's advancement.
[ He says that mostly as cover. Wouldn't want to promise anything and disappoint now, would he? But if they're successful, they'll be the first to benefit from their labours anyway. ]
Now then, how knowledgeable are you about machines?
no subject
Of this world's magitech?--Rudimentary at best, I'm afraid. I arrived but a month or two ago and have not had the opportunity to engage in any proper study beyond my own tinkering.
But my knowledge of my homeland's technology is extensive; more specifically, my expertise lies in the study of ancient technologies dating back ten thousand years, which have only been rediscovered in my lifetime. Despite its age, it far eclipses all modern feats of engineering and our studies have allowed us to improve our own technologies by leaps and bounds. My focuses are handheld devices like these shellphones and autonomous sentries, but I would consider my base of knowledge to be well rounded overall.

[ He's definitely pleased to have found a few experts amongst all these volunteers. It will save them some time. ]
There may even be some novel improvements or ideas you can offer as we go. Not that I doubt these schematics of course, but one never knows what form innovation takes.

[ A prospect which makes her smile openly. For all that she has pursued her studies with the intent of utilizing technology to protect and rebuild her kingdom, it is her passion for it that truly drives her. Away from the responsibilities of a reigning sovereign, Zelda would gladly live the life of the researcher she is pretending to be in this world. ]
Correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand it from Rem, the genius of this engine's design is its manner of processing magic into energy. Something in its efficiency in doing so compared to existing magitech designs.

Since this is going to advance technology here dramatically, I expect some of what we do to be used for ill purposes until it can be properly regulated. When we do eventually near completion of the first ship engine... I have no doubt both the corsair and paladin fleets will be vying to have it attached to their ships first.
[ That's just how politics goes. Emet-Selch seems to grimace to himself briefly before he pastes his cordial smile back on. ]
no subject
Would it be so bad to share these advancements equally among all, regardless of allegiance?
[ Yes, she knows how idealistic that sounds. ]
no subject
I don't plan to withhold the technology from anyone. 'Tis what Rem wishes. But I'm not so naive as to think that the corsairs and the paladins won't attempt to fight over the first working engine we make. Which means we either make two concurrently or we withhold the first until the second is finished.
no subject
The princess contemplates these two options. ]
There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. Developing two engines concurrently means we could iterate on their designs twice as quickly. But at the same time, there will be twice as many problems to troubleshoot-- and those problems will likely worsen as the two designs inevitably diverge further and further from each other with each iteration.
[ Her attention returns to the screen. ] Which do you favor?
[ It's his and Rem's project after all. Zelda just wants to be involved. ]
no subject
[ They ought to be compensated for their efforts, maybe from the sale or something of the first engine they complete. Hmm... ]
I suppose we could hold an auction for the first engine. Then the coin from its sale can fund further ventures as well as allow us to compensate the workers.
no subject
[ She tilts her head in surprise. ]
That is awfully generous, but why would you not keep it for your own crew? Or, at the very least, your own armada.
no subject
I certainly could, but with this being a group effort that would come off rather selfish, aye? What right do I have to demand so much work from these men and women only to use it for my crew? Especially when I cannot even pay them a proper wage to begin with.
no subject
I suppose I expected that anyone volunteering for this project would doing so solely for the love of the craft. Perhaps I am the exception.
[ Zelda's also still not used to having to think about things like wages. It sucks. How do normal people live like this? ]
But I will hardly turn down a wage for my labor.
no subject
[ His mouth curves into an amused smile. ]
I will be the one most out of pocket here. We shall have to see if we can recuperate some costs by making smaller gadgets on the side.
no subject
Selling smaller gadgets seems a clever plan. Perhaps those of us inexperienced with this world's magitechnology might use that as an opportunity to learn.
