[ In a rare display, Emet-Selch opts to appear in person. This is important enough to warrant an appearance, he thinks.

The backdrop appears to be a cabin on a ship somewhere. He fills most of the screen so there's not much of significance to be gleaned from it. His posture is relaxed, fingers interlaced loosely before him on the table that his shellphone sits upon. ]

Greetings, one and all.

I and Rem Tokimiya of the Raiders of the Lost Arts are seeking engineers to assist with the development of an engine. 'Tis past time we made a concerted effort to develop one. Inevitable, I would say, as this world has progressed to magical trinkets. We have examined schematics of an old pirate ship and seek to eventually put it to practical use to improve the fleets of both paladins and corsairs.

[ He pauses. It looks as though he wants to add something but he seems to think better of it. ]

Send word to either myself or Rem if you are interested in contributing to the work. While an engine capable of powering a ship is our eventual goal, 'twill be enough to make something on a smaller scale for now - such as heaters for winter or automatic fans for summer.

Oh, a telescreen?

That would require many delicate components that may be difficult to make at this time - unless you can find me a goldsmith and a blacksmith willing to work unreasonable requests. Even then, there are other factors I need to consider, such as the lack of working radio.

[ Zelda nearly drops her phone in surprise and excitement when she hears Rem's name. This is him! The person she was telling Zelda about! The one she's working with on those amazing engine schematics she showed Zelda the day they met on the boardwalk!

Everything after "seeking engineers to assist with the development of an engine" kind of goes unheard as the princess fumbles with her shellphone. Where is that live camera function again? (This interface is so unintuitive compared to the Purah Pad.)

So the video call Emet-Selch receives begins with a moment of Zelda staring with furrowed brows until she realizes she's got it working correctly, upon which time she immediately brightens up like some kind of living ray of sunshine. ]

Yes, hello, can you see me all right? I understand you are seeking engineers?

[ What a sunny disposition. ]

Aye, I can see and hear you just fine. And you are...?

Zelda, Pr- [ In her excitement, Zelda nearly forgets that she's supposed to be keeping her royal title a secret. (It's just not safe to be a princess without a guard around all these pirates.) ] -p-pleased to make your acquaintance. I take it you are Emet-Selch?

[ Seems like a safe assumption for a display name like "emet-sulk." ] I am a friend of Rem Tokimiya's. She recommended I get in contact with you regarding the engine schematics you mentioned.

You're speaking my language! I've made an engine before, been wanting to do the same here too. I don't have any of the same relics I used back home to do it here, but I'm sure I can source something if I really try.

Stars willing, we'll be building them from the ground up. There's no point relying upon unknown relics - what will you do when they break down? No, these designs must be drawn up and replicated. Knowing its construction means problems can be diagnosed and fixed.

That's not too hard either, the relics just helped for casing anyway. You have a place you're getting the goods from already, or do we need to find a source too?

I suppose it would depend on the type of engine, but I'd be happy to help out. The technology here is...a little different than what I'm accustomed too, but I've worked with Rem before.

[What might be of more interest to Emet-Selk is the robot suitcase floating behind Kaveh in frame of his camera--Mehrak is currently helping sort and put away books, but she's still visible in the frame.]

To me, it is primitive. I'd like to know your impressions of it however - as well as what you're accustomed to.

It's difficult. The inclusion of riftfarer technology muddies it, and it does not progress the same.

[He sighs a little, and leans on his hand.] These shellphones, for example--the network reminds me much of the Akasha terminals, though with far more limited access to information. But the Akasha could not send live video; movies and film are being developed in Fontaine, but they're not common among the other nations yet.

[He thinks to himself a bit.] I suppose it's most accurate to say our advances are prioritized differently--I would put much of Teyvat as ahead of this place, and the civilizations that fell far beyond it, but outside Fontaine, machinery isn't a high priority for scientific advancement. Largely to do with the fact Khaen'rian war machines still roam the land killing people some five hundred years after their masters are dead and buried--it seems a bit like folly to pursue the same technology, with the way that ended.

Depends on what kind of engine. I'm not skilled in developing one for ships, I do have experience with fixing machines.

[And you know. Washing machines and vacuums because a certain sister keeps breaking them.]

If you're willing to learn then I can set aside some time to teach you some basics. We won't be building one for a ship to start - smaller scale motors and the like will be needed to power the tools eventually needed to make something so large.

That's very kind of you to teach me. I'll try my best to learn as much as I can from you and I'll make sure to make it the best motor for the ship too!

You want to develop a magitech engine to fit the ships of this world? Or just one ship in particular?

[ He closes his eyes and a small but very tired and resigned sigh leaves him. ]

I am making the no doubt very foolish mistake of allowing this engine to be used equally, by all. Because Rem believes that something so benign as an engine cannot possibly be used for ill.

I don't know who this 'Rem' is but maybe explain to them that technology is only as good as the intent?

As a smith, I know my weapons are gonna be used for war so I make sure my armor is always designed to at least keep the wearer safer than they'd be normally. Engines like that start off benign but all it takes is one person to get the idea to weaponize it.

I think if you're gonna give people access to it you should have some sort of failsafe.
