[ In a rare display, Emet-Selch opts to appear in person. This is important enough to warrant an appearance, he thinks.
The backdrop appears to be a cabin on a ship somewhere. He fills most of the screen so there's not much of significance to be gleaned from it. His posture is relaxed, fingers interlaced loosely before him on the table that his shellphone sits upon. ]
Greetings, one and all.
I and Rem Tokimiya of the Raiders of the Lost Arts are seeking engineers to assist with the development of an engine. 'Tis past time we made a concerted effort to develop one. Inevitable, I would say, as this world has progressed to magical trinkets. We have examined schematics of an old pirate ship and seek to eventually put it to practical use to improve the fleets of both paladins and corsairs.
[ He pauses. It looks as though he wants to add something but he seems to think better of it. ]
Send word to either myself or Rem if you are interested in contributing to the work. While an engine capable of powering a ship is our eventual goal, 'twill be enough to make something on a smaller scale for now - such as heaters for winter or automatic fans for summer.

I am making the no doubt very foolish mistake of allowing this engine to be used equally, by all. Because Rem believes that something so benign as an engine cannot possibly be used for ill.

As a smith, I know my weapons are gonna be used for war so I make sure my armor is always designed to at least keep the wearer safer than they'd be normally. Engines like that start off benign but all it takes is one person to get the idea to weaponize it.
I think if you're gonna give people access to it you should have some sort of failsafe.

Wishful, ideological thinkers like her can never be dissuaded. And it is impossible to contain the spread of knowledge once it is loosed into the world. I could build a self-destruct into every engine and some malicious mind would use it to kill a dozen others. I could make it as benign as something which stalls and shuts down and it could still kill if done at the right moment. Life support systems at a hospital. An elevator winching mine workers to safety ahead of an imminent collapse. A ship becalmed at sea, too far from any island.
In short, unless I wish to turn myself into a tyrant, nothing can stop the weaponisation of even the most harmless tool. I have seen it over, and over again. That is simply how you all are.

Wait, what do you mean 'you all?'
no subject
[ He shrugs though and flaps a hand. ]
But that is neither here nor there. I committed to doing this for Rem's sake and I do not renege on my word.
no subject
So, when you say 'you all' and that implies 'mortal men' that would make you.....?
[HELP HIM OUT HERE EMET]
no subject
...I'm immortal.
[ He's wearing a somewhat exasperated look right now. ]

...I am not a god. Would being one make any difference?

Well... Hypothetically, shall we say I had care of the realm beyond this one?

[ His voice and expression are mildly scornful. ]
The people of my star call it the Aetherial Sea now, but I have always known it as the Underworld. 'Tis where souls gather after death and prepare to be reborn.

[The concern on Darin's face is very plain. Darin does not like gods on principle and undead things are the only things that actually terrify him. That and coming to terms with his own powers and destiny but that's a little less tangible.]
So you're like...Lord of the Ghosts.
Okay.
Okay, that's.
....Okay.
no subject
[ Well, technically-- but no, not important. ]
And I said I am not a god. I know I seem that way to you with shorter lifespans but every one of my people shared the same longevity - although each had their own talents, of course.

So...your people all live really long lives? And you were like...steward of the realm of souls?
[A thought occurs to him.]
So, okay...if someone dies and their soul goes to this place do they...retain some level of consciousness? Their memories?
no subject
That would depend on the strength of their spirit or will, so to speak. The consciousness of someone with a strong sense of self may linger longer than for one whose spirit is weaker. Those with strong grudges tend to manifest as malevolent spirits, consumed by memories of their ire. Those at peace can also be found of course, but they have little reason to linger in the Underworld.

[He looks a little sick at that. Unfortunately, it confirms something he was hoping was just some sort of trick.]
That...makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up.
no subject
[ A short pause as he eyes the other man. ]
...But you don't seem very pleased with the answer I gave. Cultural differences, I presume?
no subject
Just...confirming something I didn't want to be true. That someone's soul can retain its memories because of hate. That someone strong enough with enough anger in their heart won't find peace.

My brother...died when we were kids. But before I arrived here, he'd come back. Alive and well and...
[And way more powerful than he ever thought either of them could be.]
...And bearing a grudge.
no subject
[ ...--]
If I may, that sounds rather more like some form of necromancy. If your brother was filled with such hate as a child, you would have known immediately.
