[ Perhaps this was inevitable given recent events and Sherlock's insecurities about his worth and ability to have purpose in this world. ]

I have a small series of questions to ask those who have gone from not having magic to having magic. Of particular interest are those who have only gained magic from this world, but I will not turn away answers from others either.

The reason I ask these questions is I come from a world where magic is usually a trick using sleight of hand and obfuscation. I inherited my brother's notebooks covering magical theories of this world, but they do not go into the more practical applications or personal aspects of magic. Surely the tattoo is only a single step among many.

  • How did you decide on what magic to learn?
  • How did you learn to control that magic?
  • Do you feel who you are fundamentally has changed? How so?
  • Have you created any contingency plans in case something goes wrong with your magic or yourself?
[ He... really hopes no one reads too deeply into that last one, but it is a worry Sherlock has given family history and having others within his head before.

And because he learned from Alhaitham's survey...
]

I understand that such a topic might be very personal. Respond anonymously if you desire and only what you are comfortable with sharing. If you'd rather meet in person, I can arrange that as well.

How did you decide on what magic to learn?

I tried to think of something pragmatic, while looking at the options available. Earth didn't make sense because we're on islands, fire felt too dangerous on wooden ships. Water is available everywhere, but I felt that could be too overwhelming to start. Wind could be useful but maybe too situational, electricity was possible but felt like it might be underused.

I settled on metal, because if someone came at me with weapons, I could disarm them, by dulling the weapon.

Once I felt more confident, I got a second tattoo for lightning since they seemed like a good mix.

How did you learn to control that magic?

Trial and error, practice. Started with just bending metal, then changing the metals shape, being able to lift heavy metal objects. I've had to practice to get the shapes of the metal to better looking objects, but I found working with the black smiths helped a lot with that. I've also recently realised I can use my powers to reinforce my body to increase my strength and durability, while lightning can make my reaction time a lot faster.

Do you feel who you are fundamentally has changed? How so?

Mentally? Not really, though I've gained a bit more... appreciation, I guess for both the supernatural and what a family member went through back home. In the end I'm still myself, for better or for worse.

Physically, well. Moving faster and having tougher skin does make me feel more confident in dealing with the threats here. It's more about keeping people I care about safe than anything else, and if that's what I have to do, I'll do it.

Have you created any contingency plans in case something goes wrong with your magic or yourself?

Not that I've thought of, other than letting the tattoo fade. Might be something worth considering, though I'd need to think of how.

It might be worth asking that Ocotopus if he can remove tattoos as well as put them on? Let you try one out and then you pay for it to get rid of it if it doesn't feel right.
