Subject: Magic: deciding, gaining, learning
Warnings: none atm
[ Perhaps this was inevitable given recent events and Sherlock's insecurities about his worth and ability to have purpose in this world. ]
I have a small series of questions to ask those who have gone from not having magic to having magic. Of particular interest are those who have only gained magic from this world, but I will not turn away answers from others either.
The reason I ask these questions is I come from a world where magic is usually a trick using sleight of hand and obfuscation. I inherited my brother's notebooks covering magical theories of this world, but they do not go into the more practical applications or personal aspects of magic. Surely the tattoo is only a single step among many.
And because he learned from Alhaitham's survey... ]
I understand that such a topic might be very personal. Respond anonymously if you desire and only what you are comfortable with sharing. If you'd rather meet in person, I can arrange that as well.

- How did you decide on what magic to learn?
- How did you learn to control that magic?
- Do you feel who you are fundamentally has changed? How so?
- Have you created any contingency plans in case something goes wrong with your magic or yourself?

will that help?
Some of these I can also answer from when I initially received my vision at home.

[ He's spent enough time with people from Teyvat that, by now, he's had to pick up on a Vision being something received and having to do with what Sherlock would call magic. ]
yapper: activated
It's less that the Vision fundamentally changed me, and more because I changed, I was granted the Vision.
As far as the magic here...I can channel it through my Vision to an extent, but there's a heightened sense of the energy inherent to this world, which is what the tattoos seem to draw on. So controlling hasn't been difficult, but it does feel strange, and is far more tiring.
Anyway, I decided on plant magic because I come from a jungle nation, and I wasn't quite sure what to pick. While my vision was active, I couldn't use it until I got the tattoo.
And of course I have plans. I did back home, too--I don't use my Vision primarily for combat.

I hope that helps a little. Sorry it wasn't only about magic here. I thought since I had to learn magic before it still counted though.

Magic in my world's both parlor tricks people put on, for ordinary people, and also supernatural stuff and artifacts that do all sort of things. I didn't have magic before coming here. [unless magical curses fit that quota]
My strength and speed was cut in half when I landed, and I couldn't utilize any of my ki until I got a tattoo. Light just felt like the right element to use to attune my energy again. I'm a quick learner, and I've mostly been doing what I normally use, so it wasn't that difficult. Hadn't really experimented with it outside of that. I don't feel any different as I did before I got brought here.
What do you mean by the last part anyway? You mean if someone decided to turn the octopus guy into calamari?
no subject
Your use of ki sounds like a type of magic to me, but I digress. It follows that you would chose your element based on the abilities you already knew.
There have been instances in this world where outside forces influenced people's minds. A person with magic would be a greater danger.
[ Sherlock also chastises himself for not considering the angle of what might happen should the tattooist fall either. He's really slipping. ]

If I'm not mistaken, you do not choose the element of the Vision, but did you decide to use a similar magic here?

I tried to think of something pragmatic, while looking at the options available. Earth didn't make sense because we're on islands, fire felt too dangerous on wooden ships. Water is available everywhere, but I felt that could be too overwhelming to start. Wind could be useful but maybe too situational, electricity was possible but felt like it might be underused.
I settled on metal, because if someone came at me with weapons, I could disarm them, by dulling the weapon.
Once I felt more confident, I got a second tattoo for lightning since they seemed like a good mix.
How did you learn to control that magic?
Trial and error, practice. Started with just bending metal, then changing the metals shape, being able to lift heavy metal objects. I've had to practice to get the shapes of the metal to better looking objects, but I found working with the black smiths helped a lot with that. I've also recently realised I can use my powers to reinforce my body to increase my strength and durability, while lightning can make my reaction time a lot faster.
Do you feel who you are fundamentally has changed? How so?
Mentally? Not really, though I've gained a bit more... appreciation, I guess for both the supernatural and what a family member went through back home. In the end I'm still myself, for better or for worse.
Physically, well. Moving faster and having tougher skin does make me feel more confident in dealing with the threats here. It's more about keeping people I care about safe than anything else, and if that's what I have to do, I'll do it.
Have you created any contingency plans in case something goes wrong with your magic or yourself?
Not that I've thought of, other than letting the tattoo fade. Might be something worth considering, though I'd need to think of how.
It might be worth asking that Ocotopus if he can remove tattoos as well as put them on? Let you try one out and then you pay for it to get rid of it if it doesn't feel right.

[ No one is making the choice for him, so he must be the one to decide. Sherlock is not going to randomly pick an element should he go forward with the idea. ]
By your response, you seem to be pleased with your choice and application of magic in this world. Do you not feel overwhelmed by having two magics?

I was grafted with magical ability at an early age long before coming here, so my experience may not be as helpful.
The tattoo here was something I chose of my free will, though; that's always brought me some comfort.
[It's even a bird themed tattoo. Symbolism!]

[emet-sulk]
Learning to control it was an arduous process that took many centuries of study and practice. Whether it changed me as a person I cannot say, because it has always been a part of me in the same way a babe intrinsically knows how to breathe air into its lungs when they are first born. Should I ever lose control of it, well, I will simply die again and that will be that. But I won't, because I master this aether. It does not master me.

Of course, you and I have touched on this topic before, and so while I will gladly answer any questions you may have, I am more curious to know how your research has been going. As I recall, the idea that magic was very real was quite new to you.

Might you be referring to my brother, Mycroft? He made a study of magical theory before he left, and I have his notebooks.
I am Sherlock, his younger brother.

I'm crying , what excellent references for him to have
