A curious question to my fellow riftfarers — to those who are capable of "summoning" or calling upon powerful beings or even people, how does it work in your world? Any particular requirements? Contracts?

And have you any luck doing so while here? Any changes you've discovered?

[This is a general broadcast type post, so anyone can threadhop if they'd like to swap stories or anything! Cid will be reading everything...with very keen interest.]

In case you're wondering what this is about, while on that ghost ship a girl somehow managed to summon me from a rock she had—materia she called it. She also knew about Ramuh and some of the other Eikons from our world.

Given there was no warning and that she might not be the only one, thought I should give everyone a heads up. For now I'll be trying some tests with her to see how it works and will share the results.

Typically not for myself. I can summon several dozen creatures at once, though I can only keep so many portals actively open.

My familiars are typically a white tiger, several bright red birds and a black tortoise as well as multiple other birds. Where they come from I can't say, they simply heed my summons and aid me.

So they're all animals? But not normal ones I presume.

No, not at all. They can die as regular animals might but they are far more powerful.

Are they divine in nature or more like powerful beasts or monsters? You also mentioned the use of portals.

I believe they must be divine. They can use magic fairly freely themselves.

Yes, they arrive through my summoning circles -- or portals, if you will. Though since I arrived here none of them answer me.

So they are not directly tied or bonded to you.

[That makes sense.]

Curious, do the creatures exist within your world? For instance, perhaps they were grazing in a forest before you call them, and they use those portals to travel from their location to yours.

I don't believe they do. They're capable of using some magic themselves, chiefly for movement speed and strength though. Wherever they arrive from must be a whole other place.

So another realm entirely, perhaps. That would give credence to that theory you mentioned before, about the distance.

The more I hear of other worlds, the more fascinating how different they can be.

Were they always so willing to work with you in the beginning?

It is very intriguing. The powers this place grants with the tattoo are not so different from my mother's own magic. At least the way it expressed itself with me.

They were. They've always been very willing to help me. I won't force them to do anything for me.

Expressed itself?

[Sounds a bit different.]

But that's appreciated. It's no wonder they would be willing to help.

Those who can use magic in my own world are typically born with an aptitude for it. You can study and strengthen it but you must have some skill for it to begin with. How that magic express itself is different for everyone.

Is that not how summons typically work?

That I wouldn't know. Summoning was a thing of ancient past, even considered more as myths, and I unfortunately did not read much of the little texts that remained.

From what I'm hearing from everyone else, it seems there are a number of different ways. Which I suppose makes sense with the different ways magic can work.

How interesting! It isn't exactly common where I'm from but it's definitely not relegated to the past or myth.

It's fascinating how many different ways magic can be found, isn't it. While I don't necessarily agree with how any of us arrived here it's not a wholly unpleasant experience. Learning new methods of magic is intriguing.

Indeed, makes you realize how much wider the universe truly is.

And I appreciate your own input. Makes me curious about your world.

I will say there is far less sailing in my daily life there than there is here. Magic is a less common thing though.

More landlocked, are you? I can see how it must be a shock then.

But you mentioned earlier that magic is something you're born with and must have a capacity for. Does this mean that there are not a lot of magic users?
