A curious question to my fellow riftfarers — to those who are capable of "summoning" or calling upon powerful beings or even people, how does it work in your world? Any particular requirements? Contracts?

And have you any luck doing so while here? Any changes you've discovered?

[This is a general broadcast type post, so anyone can threadhop if they'd like to swap stories or anything! Cid will be reading everything...with very keen interest.]

In case you're wondering what this is about, while on that ghost ship a girl somehow managed to summon me from a rock she had—materia she called it. She also knew about Ramuh and some of the other Eikons from our world.

Given there was no warning and that she might not be the only one, thought I should give everyone a heads up. For now I'll be trying some tests with her to see how it works and will share the results.

So a completely different method. Do you know how?

I'm looking to find a way that can give us more control, but until then we'll have to try and hope these people are understanding and listen to whatever conditions or requests we make—which includes not calling upon us at all.

Which I know isn't exactly what you want to hear, but the best we can for the moment.

According to Rem, while not everyone is authorized to summon nor does everybody has the ability, if they are and do, it takes knowledge of the specific spell and power. She wouldn't quite explain what she meant by "power", but considering she was unconscious when I was summoned, it's probably something physical.

So there's at least two methods. Neither of which I particularly care for.

And no, it's not, but we should all discuss the possibility of encountering someone who isn't as agreeable to respecting our requests. If there's anything I'm fully aware of is that there's always one person like that.

And that's the exact situation I'm trying to prevent before it happens. We're lucky so far, but luck can only hold for so long.

Yuffie did tell me that the materia needs to be charged up and can only be done so in battle. So there's at least a condition for that. And this Rem seems to need some kind of power, though at a cost of losing consciousness from what you're saying.

Were you forced to do anything once you were summoned? Or could you freely walk away?

Two separate methods with two different conditions. Founder, let there not be a third. Or fourth if you count us.

No, thankfully not. I could have left as soon as I arrived, but there was the small issue of me not knowing where I was pulled to in the first place.

Likewise with the materia. I could have left, but given that she was surrounded by some undead, couldn't really leave her there.

You should invest in a Ring of Returning. It will allow you to return back to certain locations. It's not a solution, but it will at least help you leave should you find yourself in an undesirable situation.

A Ring of Returning? I did notice one available, but felt there wasn't really a need for one at the moment. But you know what they say about hindsight. Maybe it would have saved the remainder of my lunch from the cat's thieving ways.

An unfortunate loss, but at least you weren't in a more compromising situation.

Hopefully Rem has learned her lesson so I can find comfort in that never happening.
