A boat would perhaps still be useful, even if only as a resting point in the event you need to take breaks while traveling across the ocean.

I myself have had very little good experiences with flying, but that probably has to do with the fact that I have to use a broom or other vehicles capable of flight instead of having wings.

You've got me there, guess standing at the top of the mast is fun enough, but it's the feeling of the boat moving that's so strange. Buildings don't do that.

A broom? I've never seen one capable of flight.

They are pretty common to use where I'm from, as they are a useful tool for mages to get around with if they are unable to use other means to travel from place to place.

Oh I see, I think. Most people can't fly where I'm from. Good for me when I'm trying to get around. No traffic!

Oh, is it not common for there to be others with wings where you're from, despite having them yourself?

I wouldn't say common exactly. There's a percentage of people who have mutation quirks like mine, called heteromorphs, but they can be a mutation of just about anything, so wings aren't the most common. Even if you have wings, that doesn't mean you could take flight.

I have the proper bone structure to be able to support myself in the air.

I see. So whether you have wings or something else going on entirely is based on these "quirks"...

[Interesting. It would almost sound like a signature spell, save for it sounding like something you have from birth as opposed to something developed with one's magic over time.]

That's right. Quirks are superhuman abilities and there are several types and a wide variety. Everyone has a unique ability. Mine just happens to be my wings. Heteromorphs are those who have permanent mutations, while some people can transform at will.

Ryukyu for example can turn herself into a dragon if she feels like it, but you wouldn't know looking at her the rest of the time she appears like an ordinary human.

I think I understand now, at least a little better than I did before.

[Now he can't help but wonder if his own signature spell would actually work on Hawks or others from this man's world, if quirks can be traded like the spells or traits his deals typically rely upon... food for thought in the future.]

Aside from the ability to fly, what's it like having wings, if you don't mind my asking? Are there any other unique skills that you can do because of them?

I'll tell you my thoughts, but I don't know how helpful they'll be. Having been without them temporarily when I got here, they affect my balance more than I realized, that was really weird, but also most things are not made for winged people so that much is a little awkward. If I want a new shirt I tend to just rip holes in it which annoys my tailoring friend to no end, I think he wishes I would let him fix it. Admittedly I do it to bug him.

I can manipulate each feather individually and detach them, that's what makes me great in rescue missions because I can find people and yank them to safety with each feather. They carry about 200 lbs each. I can fly as long as I have about 40% of my feathers left, but less than that and I'm grounded. I can also make them as sharp or as soft as I want.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone using the feathers of their wings like that before... do you have to regrow the ones you detach, or is there something else to it?

It's a pretty unique quirk.

That depends. If they get damaged, then yes. I can go to just my pin feathers and my wings grow back to full size in a week. Flight ready in three days. Most of them don't get damaged most of the time so they just rejoin my wings when I'm done with them.

Ah, I see! That is quite a useful skill if you are able to reattach them, instead of having to grow back new wings every single time.

Yeah, for the most part. On an average patrol I can probably expect to lose about 10% of my feathers, but they'll grow back by morning so it's not a problem. Once they break I drop the connection. They can't be healed anyway.

Well, it sounds like you will undoubtedly be a major asset all the same. Perhaps I will have to consider calling upon your services should I need your help while I'm here.

Do you have any qualms about doing deliveries, perhaps? I'm working on a few potions and things that might be helpful for some people here, and may need a courier to deliver said items when they're ready to people if they are unable to get them in person.

[ He should definitely, definitely ask what they are for - but he's a bit unmoored at the moment and if he doesn't make friends contacts, he might find himself in trouble. It's all about not being a big problem for people and he finds out there's illicit activity later, then he can deal with it at the time. ]

I'd make a great courier, I'm really fast. I don't mind that at all.
