[The camera feed opens up to stunning view of an island. The cameraperson is standing near a grotto into which a relatively short waterfall feeds, creating a glittering mist over the pond. It pans, in a hand too excited to hold it entirely steady, over the lush greenery, showing a gently rolling hill that flattens out into a plain. Mehrak can be seen zipping about, scanning the area and placing markers about the island, though what they'll become is anyone's guess.]

Look at this.

[Kaveh's voice is shaking with pure unadulterated glee and maybe a little bit of tears, but he turns the camera until he finds his target--Alhaitham, a distance away, who seems to be communicating something to Mehrak.]

This ridiculous man bought me an island.

[Has your spouse bought you a whole-ass island? no? then kaveh's got the superior husband.]

[At that, Azul frowns heavily.]

Even if it is a gift, a whole island is still a rather costly thing to buy.

I'm certainly not arguing with that. But he's meticulous about finances, so I trust he could afford to do so.

[Not that they don't share finances, they do, but Alhaitham's the one who keeps pretty close track of these things.]

He's made it a little hard to figure out what to do for his birthday, though.

[Well, at least that's good to know that the people who run the cafe he is helping out are in fact keeping track of their finances. Or at least that Alhaitham is... but then again, given the way Alhaitham arranged their current deal for seasickness potions, Azul can agree that the man seems to have some sense in being careful enough to not make any mistakes with his money...]

It seems almost a little unfair to expect something just as grand as an island for one's birthday... although, given how close the two of you are, I assume that he is going to be happy no matter what you get him.

I'm sure he doesn't expect something matching in monetary value...frankly I'm not sure there's anything available that would match.

But it's about the sentiment behind it, and I admit, I already set a high bar for that last year.

Oh? What was it that you had gotten him last year?

Something from home that's very...precious to him.

[Kaveh smiles, a little softly.] And something else I shan't be discussing on the network.

[... Oh.]

I think I'll refrain from asking further questions about that particular subject, then.

[Moving on...]

What is it that you plan on doing with the island?

I'll design a home for the two of us, here. After that, I might rent out the one we're currently living in on Eltrut...there's more space here for me to garden, and it'll be nice to design a home again, if I'm honest. That's probably part of why he did it.

I see.. I knew you had designed the cafe and several of the items within, but I had not realized just how much you liked designing buildings and the like in general, it seems.

I am an architect by trade, after all. It's certainly not a profession I'd recommend to anyone who doesn't truly love it.

Well, in that case, perhaps I should consider hiring you as a consultant sometime for when I finish getting plans put together for the office space I want to have over my workshop here.

I'd be more than happy to help out. Interior design is one of my specialties too.

[As evidenced by the Cafe, honestly.]

Then, I will be sure to keep you in mind for it, and once I've finished drawing up a few ideas and plans I have for the office, I can show them for you to look at and tell me what you'd suggest.

Please, bring them to me at any time.

[Kaveh laughs.] There's not as much demand for architectural designers here unless I take up becoming a shipwright, and that takes a little longer than a year. So giving me something to design would be more than welcome.

That long to become one, huh... ah, speaking of which, how long have you been living here, if you don't mind my asking?

A little bit over a year, now. [A beat.] Ah, but we briefly returned home in the fall...sort of. Rather, time doesn't move the same between worlds, so we were gone for 12 hours here while a year passed for us at home.

Really? Then... that's roughly a month per hour in terms of time that passed between here and there.

... And I take it you're going to tell me that you don't remember how you suddenly ended up back at home, or how you would up back here again?

It doesn't seem to be consistent. We spent 11 months here before we returned and went back to the exact minute we originally left.

[Kaveh grimaces, and there's a flicker of red anger in his eyes.] We didn't remember this world at all. Not until we washed up on the shore again.

[sigh]

How annoying. This place really doesn't make it easy to try to understand why it brings or sends people away in this manner...

Does magic tend to make sense in your world, Azul?

[just. dryly gonna point that out.]

[Azul just gives Kaveh a raised eyebrow right back.]

In most cases, it does? Do you think I would be a mage capable of creating my own spells and potions if I didn't have an understanding of how to use magic to make those things possible?

[Kaveh holds his palms up quellingly.]

It's just that I come from a place where each instance of magic follows it's own rules and does not need to be consistent with any other kind of magic, nor even with itself.

So in that sense, how little this world makes logical sense isn't a surprise.

Hmm. I suppose you could have a point there, if magic does not work the same in your world as it does for mine. Regardless, I still think there has to be some explanation regarding how this place summons people from other worlds and dimensions, rather than simply shrugging and deciding it's not worth trying to make sense of.
