[ Emet-Selch is in his workshop. Slightly off-screen, one can see a mess of small, miscellaneous parts. He looks...mildly stressed. ]
This may seem an...odd question. Some of you come from worlds which use the binary system in your programming language, correct? How are those binary digits arranged? I'm lacking something fundamental that allows the data from this disc to be deciphered in a meaningful way.
[ He holds up the DVD that Denji had given him. It's something anyone from Earth or an Earth-adjacent world with the technology will recognise. ]
Any assistance, however small, would be appreciated.

[Don't mind the odd bit of background noise, mostly animals moving around.]

--I hope I'm not taking you away from your own work.

[A slight pause-]
Honestly? The break from this may do me some good, as of now nothing requires my immediate attention and I have ensured there is plenty of salves, bandages, and healing potions anyone can use if they know which shelf it is located.

If you're sure then come to the Forge when you can. The device I'm working on is there. I've been stuck on it for weeks now.

[ He ends the transmission here. Emet-Selch can be found in his workspace on the upper level of the Forge: an enclosed room with a running window that still allows him to keep watch on work below. When Turo gets there, he'll see a mess of scattered pieces on Emet-Selch's workbench along with some distinct parts linked together to project an image hovering in mid-air. There is a faint sense of buzzing or static from it. Like the aftermath of lightning. ]
Action, get!
I took the extra time to ensure I am not bringing any animal fur or feather, nor anything else, along with me.
[A reason he was just a little later than he usually might have been. A certain respect for entering the workspaces of others after the heavy working done at Cosmo Conservatory.]

[ He gestures for Turo to pull up a stool if he likes and points out a spot to put down his bags. ]
Have I mentioned what I'm trying build? I forget.
no subject
[Still, he did pull up a stool even as he spoke, bag set aside as he settled—]
I do not believe so, no.

[ He points at the sprawl of components on his table, the thing that is essentially split into three parts. ]
He gave me a disc and asked me to build something that could read and display the contents. Let me tell you that the sheer work I had to put in to build a laser capable of reading those infernally small marks...
[ The frustrated sound out of his throat describes his feelings on the matter. If he breaks or loses any of the components in the laser reader, he may just pitch a fit.
Anyway. ]
Now that's all well and good, but I cannot make sense of the data recorded. I understand 'tis binary but they must be grouped into further clumps of data and 'tis far too time-consuming to test every possible grouping sequentially. I have this screen here but quite frankly I have no idea if it functions as intended. If my intemediary device isn't even processing the data correctly then it is useless.
[ He points to the middle component which he made to decipher the binary off the disc.
Insert technical description of how it looksbut the bottom line is that it can be adjusted. It links to the final part - the screen itself - which should theoretically display an image once the data is interpreted correctly. ]
no subject
[His head tilted a little as he looked the components over-]
A disc- did he call it a DVD or something else? Quite a bit, from music, movies, and even games can be put onto such a disc. [Or be used to open a secret-]
I can attempt to read it, a quick scan, and be able to supply you with the information needed to help parse it and turn that data into sound and imagery. With that you should be able to tweak and adjust this in order to process it.
[A small gesture towards his own eyes as he spoke, the color of them flickering from brown on white to teal on black and back again- to more or less emphasize that he could.]
no subject
Ah, yes, that IS what he called it: a DVD. This one has a 'movie', he said. A recording of some theatrical production.
[ The acronym and other modern Earth-centric terms are foreign to Emet-Selch so he has been using a more familiar terms. Reaching over, he turns off the machine and removes the disc, holding it out to Turo. ]
Anything you can glean will be of great help. Do be careful not to break it - I would hate to have to ask the boy to procure another copy.
no subject
[Turo did carefully take the disc, flipping it over onto the shiny side; eyes flickered from being that warm grown on white to a glowing teal on black. Scanlines visible as he ran a scan-
A few different times, narrowing down what he could.]
Ah- I think I have something.
[Information to at least help tweak the device made to read it so Emet could do what adjustments were needed.]
no subject
[ If he doesn't understand from context, he'll ask.
As he speaks, he's already turning back to the parts on the table, ready to adjust them. ]
no subject
[Turo knew the jargon, and did tell just what needed to be changed to give the disc better chance of being read by the device. From what he could clean off of it, eyes flickering back to 'normal.]
Did he happen to tell you what genre of movie this was? I cannot tell with this sort of scan.
no subject
Some sort of martial arts production. A lot of punching and kicking and fighting.
[ He says it with some humour and a faint smile before straightening. Oof, his back. ]
Shall we see if this works now?
no subject
[The CD was offered out to be taken back easily as Turo nodded then.]
Yes, and hopefully it does work; even if I do not mind trying another scan through of it.

A slightly distorted picture forms. The levin image moves in slow motion - doubtless because of the slow spin of the DVD. A snap of his fingers has the rotating bit spin faster, then faster again until Emet-Selch judges the image to be moving at an appropriate speed.
There's no sound but there IS an alarming crackling sound from the levin within the glass pane. ]
In the end, 'tis a light-based record player, [ he mutters to himself. ] Ingenious for a magickless people. Not as efficient as a cermet stick and electrope of course, but not bad.
[ The, uh, crackling seems to be getting alarmingly frequent... ]
no subject
Going from grooves in wax cylinders for captured sounds, projector films for imagery, and eventually marrying them together into CDs. We have holograms here and there in my world, along with the technology to store pokémon within digital boxes that can be accessed by Rotomphones.
[The crackling being monitored that entire time.]
Should it be making that noise?
no subject
...No.
[ He frowns at the screen. A single blink and the roiling aether is revealed to him. Ah. This is because he couldn't figure out a suitable outlet for the audio. But he didn't anticipate this side effect.
He waves his hand at the disc and it slows to a stop. The crackling...does not subside. ]
Oh, for the love of--
[ Crack!
He throws up a magical barrier around the screen right before it explodes and releases a small storm of lightning. Thanks to his quick thinking, the explosion is contained within. ]
late af replies because fighting 4 my life with sick
This was at least... fine-]
Must have built up for a little too long.
all good!!
Levin is a fickle element to work with. More so than the others, I feel. But handled properly, 'tis incredibly useful - as I'm sure you know.
[ However! Progress has been made. He needs to find a way to separate the audio from the video and he will have his television. ]
I am still fascinated with that method of storing flesh and blood creatures which you have. As far as I know, only the soul can be extracted in such a fashion. After which you would need the original or a new vessel to place it in.
can taste things to a degree finally at least
[At least it was contained for the moment. His head tipped to the side before there was a soft chuckle.]
I can go through the history of pokéballs, and then of the systems developed to keep them within digitized boxes through a phone application an old colleague of my creator invented and is well used by many Trainers within the Paldea region.
Of course I know how to create pokéballs by hand, and know the blueprints for the various types.
good to hear!
Through a digitised box...? A phone? As in like the shellphones we carry? Are you sure that magic doesn't play a part in your society?
[ His people used dimensional magicks on buildings so that they were fairly larger inside than they were outside. But-- ah. Perhaps...?
He folds his arms and closes his eyes. As he thinks, he mutters: ]
--If I presented this quandary to the Magitech Academy, no doubt they would be able to think of something.
no subject
Some may certainly call it magic, given certain phenomenon that happens across our world, all having to do with certain types of energy.
[Just because they could explain some of it through science didn't bring an end to the mysteries of their world.]
They might indeed.
no subject
[ A pensive glance tossed at his work in progress. ]
I could use it to bypass the size issue, although I really would rather not for this. That boy's world has no magic to speak of. I need more precise tools.
no subject
[There were also those battle tower other regions had, but likely not to the same extent to what Emet was describing.]
I have been experimenting with using various runes to act as a mix of magic and circuitry replacement- might that help?
SORRY FOR LATENESS
Ah, but is it larger on the inside than it appears from the outside?
[ A small chuckle. Well, considering their Pokeball technology, it wouldn't be surprising if they made a human-sized one for biomes. ]
Hmm... How do your runes work?
ALL GOOD
Quite so, and I understand some of it extends underwater as well. Enough so they have need of screens made to look like windows with images of the sky to help keep up with the natural day and night cycle.
[There was a small notebook taken from his pocket, Turo flipping a few pages to where he had really gotten into his rune work studies-]
They more or less help channel magical energy, much like one would expect from circuitry. I had to adapt and tweak, even combine some. It has been quite interesting, and I believe may help pick up where certain things cannot be easily created due to limited or non-existent resources.
no subject
Seems that there are still some things even he can learn. ]
Hmm... Is it something which can be taught? If I can use them to enable the creation of precision tools then my work will be made much easier.
no subject
It is something I can teach, and once some basics are down I do not doubt for a moment you will be able to experiment with them as well. Find and create new sequences to work as you need them to, it will just take some time.
no subject
Then if you could I would be very grateful. In exchange... Well, is there aught I can help with in return?
no subject
Another pair of eyes would be appreciated with some of my more... mechanical projects. Outside of the shields and more towards robotic natures to help make exploration of ruins safer.
no subject
[ Having seen a myriad of different technologies, uses, and applications, he surely has something to offer in return.
Pensive, he glances down at the Forge outside his workspace window. ]
I suppose I ought to think about a manufacturing facility next...
no subject
[Creating machines that even mimicked life, though no where near the extent of himself. Something more useful as a tool, but with some basic programming in case there was ever some emergency or other.
The runes as circuitry meant he could pack a little more without need of making them bigger- or heavier.]
Perhaps, my only worry falls on resources as it would take quite a bit of exploration to come up with enough; on land and sea.
no subject
I know. 'Tis the only reason I haven't attempted to expand yet. There is no reliable source of metal - mostly lumber and sand. It was a challenge already to build that one ship, nevermind finding enough to build two more for the armadas. I think we shall need to find ways to recycle discarded metal first.
no subject
[Recycling something that could supply a larger amount of it, outside of simply discarded items-]
The work goes on from there, of course.
no subject
[ What if he focuses on dismantling old ships rather than necessarily expanding his operation...? Hm! ]
Yes... Yes, I may just do that. [ A wry smile Turo's way. ] Thank you, you've been most helpful - in more ways than one.
no subject
[Those mostly got wouldn't have anything useful, and certain others could be left where they were. Be easy enough to spot any wreckage that was doing active damage to the ecosystem- mostly.]
Of course, I am happy to be of help. It does do well to simply workshop ideas or merely thoughts with someone else, most of the time.
