Though it is embarrassing to have allowed the haunting to occur in the first place, it is the estate manager's duty to disclose that it has happened if they are to correct it on behalf of their lord.

If they are your estate manager and they lie to you, they should be punished at your discretion. If they are another lord's estate manager and they lie to you, both they and their lord should be punished in a manner that is both public and decisive so others may understand that attempts to cheat you will not be tolerated.

Such a straightforward way of solving problems! Of course I'd love to, but I'm not sure the corsairs would take so kindly to it.

Punishment comes in many forms. This venerable one has observed that corsairs favor public humiliation and an insultingly remedial reeducation for those that are not skilled in their favored craft of theft without being caught. If you are truly concerned for how 'kindly' they take a justified response, there are certain to be methods and means that they'll approve of.
