More like its bloodied adulthood. Valisthea has been around for a while.
[Another situation of text through tone: one cannot witness Jill's words dripping with an unusual show of sarcasm.]
no subject
The age of a civilization and its rate of development do not necessarily correlate.
no subject
[Jill hits send before finishing her reply and she scrambles to complete her typing for a few seconds, but in the end, she realizes it doesn't matter. Hunter seems to want to make a point and whatever it is, she'll just let him go along with it. It'll certainly save her from annoyance.]
Nevermind. That said, I hope I've sated your curiosity on the state of humans. From my world, at least.
no subject
It fits the pattern I've observed in most landbound races. Segregation by class assigned at birth, exploitation of those of lower status, belief in the concepts of magic and gods, enough tenacity to survive.
[ Well, that last one could be considered a compliment?.. ]

[No Aegir versus the sharks? Versus a tangle of octopuses determined to make a better world for the eight-armed? Must be nice.]

fire nationSeaborn attacked! ]We did in the past. A necessary step in every civilization's development. Perhaps yours will move past it before its end arrives.
[ (As an Arknights character he's like, obligated to talk about Civilizations(TM).) But he does stop to frown at his shellphone. No, this isn't the time to talk about higher matters... if he can't find information on how to return home, he may as well look for other clues that might help him with his own matters. ]
I have questions about your Eikons. Please and thank you.
Are Eikons single organisms?
What degree of conscience and intelligence do they possess?
What goals do they pursue?
Describe their genesis and life cycle, including death of natural and unnatural causes.
Describe their relationship with the will and consciousness of the Dominants they are implanted in.
Describe the Eikons' relationship with each other and types of interaction.
Can a single Eikon change hosts upon the hosts' deaths? What other forms of continuity do they possess?
[ WELCOME TO FISH UNIVERSITY JILL HERE'S YOUR FIRST PAPER ASSIGNMENT, ]

[Did she think he was judging humanity? Absolutely. Maybe that wasn't his intent, but it sure was his impact. Not that Jill is upset about it; humanity in her world is truly awful and worth judgement. At least there are some people out there with the shared goal of wanting to change things for the better.
And that novel of a message he just sends as a followup is quite the thing. Jill expected questions, but not so rapidfire. If she had ever went to schooling past age twelve, she would laugh and claim this was no better than the tutors testing her on her lessons. Instead, it's a bit overwhelming and Jill decides to start with answering the first question. Hopefully Hunter won't mind.
At least he used his manners this time.]
Yes, but perhaps not in the manner you would expect. There are only nine of them and they are composed of aether, which is what makes up everything in my world. Trees, food, animals... all aether. An Eikon just has much more than a typical human, thus not making them human at all.
no subject
And... aether? Fine, he can accept that to be her world's understanding of atomic and molecular structures... mixed with some other characteristic that they denote as aether quantity? ]
How does abundance or scarcity of aether manifest in living beings? Does a tree have more or less aether than an animal?
no subject
[A beat:]
We tend to be suspicious of things behaving in ways they shouldn't, if you understand. With good reason.
no subject
This is starting to sound familiar - and dangerous. ]
Such distrust is a basic instinct.
Continue.
[ No, actually... ]
Disregard that. This method of communication is too slow. Let us speak face to face.
no subject
Besides, if he turns out to be bad business, Jill has Shiva, her lesser magick from the tattoo, and a rapier on her hip. The girl can handle herself.]
Fair enough. Should I assume you haven't explored here enough to have a preference on a meeting place?
no subject
No preference.
[ Well... He was given some basic pointers after his arrival. ]
Pick a meeting place and describe its location relative to the MANTA Center.
no subject
Very well then. I will send you coordinates of a nearby inn. It should not be hard to find as it's cleaner and less rowdy than most pirate frequented establishments.
[Which she does immediately as a follow up.]
Look for a silver-haired woman. [He can't see it, but she's giving a bit of a sheepish look.] Apparently it makes me I stand out from others.
[It's probably the length too, girl.]
no subject
[ #normal things to say.
After he receives the coordinates, it doesn't take him long to reach the inn and locate Jill. If she worried about standing out... well. She is perfectly normal compared to her new friend... although they do share the long silver hair. ]
We can continue the conversation.
[ It looks like he is no less curt in person: no hello, no introduction, not even confirming if she is his informant. ]
no subject
Um... [She pulls a handkerchief from a small pouch tied at her hip and dabs at her mouth.] It's a pleasure to meet you too, Hunter.
[It appears she will have to instruct him on the methods of saying hello, good afternoon, and all those pleasantries too.]
no subject
(And look, under the sea being shrouded in dark clothes IS inconspicuous!)
After a brief glance at the others in the inn, he takes a seat next to Jill. Something about his manner suggests that he might be uncomfortable among people, but it could just as easily be his general grumpiness. ]
You were talking about your Eikons.
[ Another brief glance around, and this time he looks Jill directly in the eye. ]
Our worlds are different and we lack a common framework of knowledge. Thus I will ask additional questions when I need clarifications. Please and thank you.
[ The way he says those words is incredibly... utilitarian. As if to him it really is just a performative ritual necessary to get an answer out of her. ]
no subject
While she can't make out anything but his eyes, Jill has become skilled enough in reading Clive's body language over the years that that talent seems to be coming in handy right this moment with someone else. Something's off about this man, not in the suspicious way, but in the he's probably better suited for network conversations rather than something face to face way. She can't help but wonder if he would have been less surly speaking like that, but instinct is telling her no.]
I was, yes.
[She slips the handkerchief away and brings out her shellphone, tapping at the screen to bring up their previous conversation. There was no way she'd remember all those questions he asked en mass off the top of her head.]
I believe you wanted to know what degree of conscience and intelligence do they possess?
no subject
[ Ulpianus brings out his own shellphone; there should be a voice recording function, right... He trusts in his own ability to remember everything she says, but he also doesn't know how being here will affect him.
... Speaking of which. He glances at the barkeeper, who catches on and asks what the guest would like. ]
Water.
[ Ignoring the weird look he gets and offers of beer, Ulpianus turns to Jill. ]
Continue.
no subject
I have not asked the other Dominants on their experience, thus I can only truly speak on my relationship with the Eikon I behold. She is capable of speech, though the opportunity to do so does not happen often. Any situations where I have called upon her wasn't one of camaraderie.
[Translation: too busy fighting to really talk.]
I am always aware of her presence in some manner, much like she is aware of mine. After all, I ultimately hold the key to whether or not she is allowed to come forth.
[Except when Jill loses control of her emotions, but she'd rather not discuss that right now.]
no subject
His brain files those considerations in the background while Ulpianus focuses his attention on her words. ]
Elaborate. Can she overcome your will and force a manifestation?
no subject
The irony is not lost on her, but at least it looks far more like an casual act than something as glaring as his piece of cloth.]
No.
[A lie. Her apartment here bears the scars that confirm it. Her shame equals her guilt.]
no subject
But for now, it's not enough signs for him to pick up on the lie. ]
I see. Tell me about the mechanism of manifestation.
no subject
For what reason would you like to know?
[Much like she's uncomfortable telling him the truth that enough psychological stress means she loses her tether on Shiva, Jill's also uncomfortable explaining how she primes. It's something she never really cared much to do, especially all the times she was forced to, and having to put it into words brings up some not-too-long-forgotten feelings in Jill.]
no subject
... To understand and combat a similar phenomenon in my world.
no subject
And why do you believe they need to be combated?
[The last word is spit out with a certain amount of disgust.]
