Wanted to leave a quick note and thank you to everyone who helped test my little inventions last month. They should be finalized and ready for official public release next month, but as promised those who helped will receive theirs earlier once ready. Just let me know where to send them off or I can contact you for pick up later.

On that note, I wanted to inquire if anyone had any requests or suggestions as to what I, or any other inventor here, should work on. Whether it's improvements or some alternate version of something that already exists here, or perhaps something similar from your own world.

While I am working with magitech, I am more interested in electrical and mechanical engineering, and I'd rather stay away from weaponry unless it's more for defensive or nonlethal use. So anything of that nature will be more my type.

If we're looking more into mechanical engineering, it might be worth looking into mechanical methods for climate control on the ships, or even in building. It might also be worth having ways of mechanically generating power without any magic--redundancy is key to a stable system.

I think most everything else I've been thinking about is maybe a little...far fetched for now.

Not a bad idea, especially if we ever enter an area that could have some negative effect on magic, even negate it.

But I'd still be curious as to what your "far fetched" ideas may be. Might inspire something else.

...Well, if you insist. I had two lines of thought. One is that for all the magitech and mechanical research, I feel as though research could be focused into medical technology. It doesn't even need to be magictech based--I've heard most prosthetics need to be able to function totally analogue in case of accidents. Even just smaller pieces of adaptive technology could do a lot of good here.

The other idea is...ah. I don't know it is possible without magitech of some kind. But when I was looking into materials to make new gliders, I...did start to wonder if they could be scaled up. To the size of a ship.

I think both are worthy causes, and we'd need help with a healer or a medic before we dive into that. No harm in looking into it, of course, but don't spread yourself too thin.

But as for the other, sounds like you're thinking of an airship. Which I would most be keen on myself.

I've hardly had too much to do at all, I can probably manage looking for a healer.

An airship? I've heard of them existing in other Nations but I've never seen them, so I'd have to work at it from scratch...

I've only seen the ruins of them myself. However, it seems there are those who are more savvy about them, so may be able to form some kind of team for this.

I don't need help on this but, actually, if you can convince Alhaitham to cough up how he made his earpieces, it'd make something else I was poking at go much faster.

Are they something he considers special or unique to him?

And if you can't convince him, what makes you think I can?

He made them himself, so I have to assume they're important. But it'd be easier to work out a good music player if I could see what he'd done.

I don't. I just think it might be entertaining to watch.

I'll see what I can do. I'm starting to understand him a little more so I might have a few ways to improve my chances.

I'll keep tinkering with a music player in the meanwhile. Spincrystals don't seem to be how people record music here but I might be able to manufacture those, too...

How would the spincrystals work? I take it from their name they "spin."

they're spinning disks that produce sound when a needle is run along them. they're named after similar items made with adeptal magic, but since I can't make that, pressing discs is the next best thing.

Interesting. The only way music is stored in my world is through a music roll, with holes punched on paper in a specific sequence to be played by the player. Obviously not quite portable, so hearing a crystal could store sound is honestly baffling.

[Especially with how crystals work in his world.]

...Oh, I think I've heard of something like that used in fontaine?

but crystals are a good choice for this, at least at home. of most natural minerals, they resonate well with sound.

How are the crystals powered?

the way i had to google how phonographs work.

with the adeptal versions, I'm not really sure.

The ones I've messed with, the crystal isn't a power source, but refined down into a sliver to make the needle,
which reads and transmits sound. It's all based on the vibrations, which is why crystal or diamond is used.

So you mean the crystal itself is etched onto to store the music, like the paper of a music roll. Now that's something.

And how big are these crystals then?

A little smaller than a dinner plate, spun into a flat disc.

I don't think I can replicate it here exactly, but pressings can be done with wax, too, even if it's less effective, so I can experiment.
