Hello.

I am in need of legal advice regarding a private matter:

Is a marriage contract legally binding if one or more parties involved were under the influence of spiritual possession while it was officiated?

Why, do you not like the one you "married"? Or not ready for it?

The situation is a fair bit more complicated than either of those things. A binding marriage contract is not something I can enter into without considering a wealth of factors.

Not the least of which is the fact that we are of different worlds entirely.

True, that does pose a problem. However, that could also be more of a reason to do so.

That aside, what are these other "factors"?

Enlighten me: why would you consider our being from different worlds as a reason in favor of marrying?

Listing them would likely reveal my identity, so you will understand if I keep the particulars to myself. Suffice it to say there are rules, responsibilities, and qualifications I must take into careful consideration when selecting a marriage partner and personal preference cannot be the highest priority.

To your question, it is because you are from different worlds that this would be your only chance. Of course, assuming 1) the feelings are mutual and great enough that you would 2) desire to share a life together and 3) you are blessed to stay a considerable length of time here. Otherwise a standard relationship would suffice. Marriage is a commitment, after all.

Which leads to your own considerations...however I have to wonder how many of them are apt for this world. What rules, responsibilities, and qualifications do you have to worry about here that you cannot live by your own wants and desires?

[ Cid's words hit Zelda unexpectedly hard. This sounds a lot like something Darin would say. He is the one who inspired her to actually start thinking about her own individual wants and desires. It's one thing to pursue her own harmless interests; it's another thing entirely to pursue interests which could negatively effect her kingdom. ]

I have the luxury of a life free from my responsibilities while I am here. But one day, I will return to my homeland, where I will have to face the consequences of my actions in this world. I cannot return married and without a spouse.

Aye, courtship. Or "dating" as others have termed it. A relationship where you have made a commitment to one another that, under normal circumstances, would lead to engagement and then marriage.

But as we know, these are not normal circumstances, and you do raise an important issue, especially if you are from a high noble birth. However, I must posit the possibility that what you experience will not change should you return.

Moreover, you may not even remember your time here at all.

It happened with someone I know from my own world. They appeared for some time, left, and returned again not long later without any recollection of their time prior. Both in our world and on their return.

I had asked other riftfarers who have been in this world longer, and it's not uncommon for it to happen.

It takes a bit for her to respond. She had been hoping that his answer would be more hearsay and less direct experience. ]

I know it's not something you may have wanted to hear, but as someone in a somewhat similar situation as yours, I thought it prudent.

[Some may just reckon it no different than the risk of death, but with that potential of a return with no memories, that kind of loss may be even harder, like witnessing someone with amnesia and worse, as there may be no way to recover those memories.]

Which is why I say that if there is a chance at all, this may be your only one. And having lost my own chances before, I find it worth taking.

[ The knowledge that she will someday return home (because she assumes this is an inevitability) becomes more and more unpleasant to consider the longer she stays in this world. She loves her home, her friends, her world... but she is coming to truly love her home and friends in this one too. Zelda at least took some comfort believing she could take this world home with her as a memory. The thought of losing these memories is bad enough... If she left and then returned with no memory of her time here, it would break Darin's heart. ]

A similar situation? Are you also involved with a riftfarer from another world?

We're from the same world, but we have no chance to meet again should we ever depart from this one.
