A curious question to my fellow riftfarers — to those who are capable of "summoning" or calling upon powerful beings or even people, how does it work in your world? Any particular requirements? Contracts?

And have you any luck doing so while here? Any changes you've discovered?

[This is a general broadcast type post, so anyone can threadhop if they'd like to swap stories or anything! Cid will be reading everything...with very keen interest.]

In case you're wondering what this is about, while on that ghost ship a girl somehow managed to summon me from a rock she had—materia she called it. She also knew about Ramuh and some of the other Eikons from our world.

Given there was no warning and that she might not be the only one, thought I should give everyone a heads up. For now I'll be trying some tests with her to see how it works and will share the results.

Have you tried priming?

I've not had any reason to, so no. Is there something I'm missing?

I've only tried once as a test to see, but wasn't able to. So was just curious.

That is concerning. It not working didn't cross my mind.

I don't think I would run into anything here that would require priming, but I'll keep that in mind. Semi-priming if I must might be enough.

It would be ideal if we never needed to prime.

[Because if they did, that meant they were in some real tough shit.]

I can at least tell you that when I semi-primed, at worst I felt a bit fatigue after using it. Not having the curse on us seems to free up our energy as well. I still wouldn't overdo it if don't need to.

Are you certain of that? What makes things different that the curse isn't a factor?

Admittedly, I've only semi-primed once. I don't typically need to use my magic, I'm a dragoon.

I cannot deny it would be a relief if the curse was not a factor.

Let's just say that curse was already showing me towards death's door. So you can imagine my surprise and relief I'm not coughing up blood every time I semi-prime or use an advanced spell more than once.

My sympathies, and it's incredibly fortunate in that case, and good to know.

Still, I would suggest caution all the same. The progression could just be slowed. Not that one needs to prolong the curse longer than it already takes.

No, I agree. Better to only save it for when absolutely need it and don't push it.

But if you do have to use it, you can have a little more peace of mind about it.

I have been avoiding using my magic unnecessarily, but it is good to know. I am not that far gone but I have long been asked to avoid priming if I could and I am willing to honour that here.

Even if there is no reason to do so. However, I haven't noticed any change in my condition.

[...Honestly, Cid knew very little about Dion's condition, nor had he much reason to back in Valisthea. Technically doesn't have much of one here, either, but perhaps due to different circumstances and such, and them now having a chance to actually converse instead of, well, being "enemies," he's a little more curious.

I do, but they haven't progressed since my arrival through small bits of magic I have used. It doesn't bother me any more than it did prior to my arrival. I hadn't realized there was a reason for it, I've merely been attempting to mitigate the damage until I cannot any longer.

Maybe the difference is I came in after my death and you're still alive.

We'll have to keep an eye on it. It would be good if it doesn't worsen. Supposedly the tattoo will play as the source of our magic as opposed to our life force, so that could help.

If it worsens, it's inevitable. There's nothing that can be done about it, but should the curse progress I will let you know for the sake of informing people that it still exists.

I don't think I could see myself as a Corsair, especially after hearing how Joshua feels about it.

You say that as if I would try to steal something else from you.

I'm not saying I don't trust you not to steal from me, but I believe the idiom suggests at this point that I would be the fool not to take measures to protect my belongings.

That all aside, what are your thoughts on this whole summoning business? I see you met your would be summoner.

We don't all have sticky fingers.

It's not ideal, but I would be hesitant to forbid her from using her materia, or attempting to, not that I could.

If it was a matter of my inconvenience and her life, I would rather be inconvenienced.

So you've at least met her.

I feel a bit similar, but the others are understandably less so.

I cannot tell anyone else how to feel or how charitable they must be under these circumstances, however I can only say that I would not be interested in letting anyone get hurt simply because it was an unfortunate time to offer my aid.

I have defended worse people than a young lady lost in a foreign land.

I'll still be looking into ways to help our side at least. Give us a bit more choice in the matter at least.
