Greetings everyone,

I hope you all are keeping warm this winter. I am not sure if it was only me or if someone else also experienced this but this morning I awoke to a sweet letter and a thoughtful gift from someone named 'Santa Claus'. I don't know any other means of reaching this person other than using our magical devices we were given. So Mr. Claus, if you are reading this, thank you for the wool cloak and stuffed animal. I don't receive gifts often.

From what I heard, 'Santa Claus' is something similar that happens in my world. However, it is a penguin to delivers presents to good children rather than a person.

You gave gift giving penguins? I cannot say that we have anything like this where I am from. For what purpose do they deliver presents?

It is to spread joy and to allow children the opportunity to do good things. The penguin only gives presents to them if they are good.

I see. So it is a reward for children doing good deeds. These must be very special birds if they possess the intelligence to give gifts. I wish I could see one for myself.

Um...they're not real. It's a fairy tale for children to believe in doing the right thing...

Oh! That.... that would make more sense. I have heard of stranger tales being true. If it's not actual penguins then who are giving presents?

Good morning, Miss Shavval!

I happened to awaken to something similar. From what I've gathered in my time here, Santa Claus is something between a historical and mythological figure meant to inspire the spirit of giving and good will among mankind. A rather charming tradition, I think.

Gale, not need to be so formal. Just Koh is fine. Or that's too familiar then Kolnatha if you like. I've never been called "Miss" anything.

You were also visited by this mysterious visitor? Fascinating... So are you saying this Santa Claus figure isn't a real entity? Then who went around giving gifts to people I wonder... It is a lovely idea however. You wouldn't find such a custom where I was raised.

As far as this 'Santa Claus' is concerned, I do believe that he was real at some point in time, and it would appear that he is known in more than one world. Whether or not he still exists in the present day on any of those planes, I cannot say, but I have it on good authority that many will give gifts in his name to honor the spirit of the season, especially to children! I believe some of our peers may have been feeling rather generous.

Fascinating. Thank you for the little history lesson. Now I feel a little foolish trying to thank a fictional character... I know it might be shocking to hear but we didn't have anything like this in the Underdark. We had celebrations but none of which are pleasant or should be discussed in front of polite company.

I don't think you need feel foolish at all. The gift came from somewhere, yes? Whoever that someone was chose not to sign their own name— how are you to thank them otherwise, hm?

I confess, that does sound rather like what I've heard and read of the Underdark. It's hard to imagine someone with your pleasant manners living there.

Oh most drow have 'pleasant manners', but to our code of conduct. You won't find many like me down there since it is usually a death sentence. Though I am glad to be considered well mannered by your terms. Have you met many drow?

santa claus is a figure of gift-giving on a lot of worlds. mysteriously consistent, with world-traveling abilities... but just a rumour, to a lot of people. i wasn't ever expecting to get a gift from him, and definitely not here.

How strange... We have no such figure where I'm from. At least not in my culture. The very idea of showing kindness to anyone would cause one's skin to crawl. So if he visited you as well... is real or imaginary?

it sounds as if you come from a pretty harsh place. receiving gifts can be kind of overwhelming when you're not used to it, right?

hm... it would be nice, to think he was real. maybe he is, in some worlds, and not in others? like gods or magic, it could differ.

Harsh is a rather accurate description of the Underdark. Not all of Faerûn is unforgiving like where I grew up. I would not compare Drow society to those of the Surface races. It's cruel by even Underdark standards. My kin aren't seen in a favorable light by most civilized races so gifts I have received are few and far between.

That is something I'm starting to realize talking with others here. It's all rather fascinating to think about other planes of existence. Or, at least I find it amusing.

You as well? My, someone really has been a busy bee. I have been getting conflicting reports on if Santa Claus is a real person or not. You have encountered him before?

Then he stopped? Someone did say that Santa only gave presents to good children. I wonder why I received one. I have long since out grown childhood.

Wait... so your parents were pretending to be Santa? Why would they pretend to give a gift from someone else? Why not address it as themselves? Seems rather confusing.

I also received a gift from this "Santa Claus" person, but I'm afraid I've never really heard of them that much before until now. Nor do I know where I am supposed to deliver a gift in exchange for the one that they gave me, which has left me in a bit of a bind.

I'm glad I'm not alone in never hearing about this 'Santa Claus' person before. My people aren't really known for their... charity.

Oh no, you're right. I didn't think about getting a gift in return.

I can't say I know that many charity people back home myself, to be honest.

But yes, I felt that it was only fair to provide a gift in return since this person saw fit to gift something to me, but since they have left no address along with their gift, it's rather troubling.
