i guess i'm not sure what the difference between "hanging out as friends" and "going out on a date" 😓😞 we've known each other for a few years if that helps.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you're overthinking this a little bit. You're nervous because you want it to be special, and I'm sure you don't want to rush into the kind of activity only mates do, but there's no need to overcomplicate it.

Be honest with each other, truly. A lot of things you did as friends will feel new now that you know you like each other. Dress up a little nicer, eat food you don't usually get, and just enjoy each other's company--that's the reason you want to court each other, no?
