You're asking the wrong man. I only heard it recently... had no idea what the hell it meant.

They don't use that one where you come from, huh? They must have a few sayings that mean something is supposed to be ridiculously easy.

My people don't have the same idioms, no. And the ones we do... they definitely don't translate.

At all.

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me. Makes me even more interested to hear them, though. What kind of sayings do your people toss around?
thearchangel: (oh jfc sir please)

[personal profile] thearchangel 2025-11-21 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing that translates very well. Mostly they're about duty and the many before the self...

It's a whole thing.

Sounds a little bit like the Qunari. They always put their people as a whole before the individual. I don't know if that's the same thing, but they have a lot of idioms that don't track where I am down south, too.

Something from your world, I'm guessing? [Because he's never heard of a Qunari before.] It's probably similar.

Funny how that works.

Yeah— well, someones, rather. I haven't run into any who have made it here.

[That's really a shame, honestly. She'd love to see Taash again, or even The Iron Bull.]

I think there are some ideas that just end up being universal, no matter where we come from. I'm not too surprised to hear there's another group of people like that, who prioritize the whole over the individual, though maybe to different degrees.

Family name? Or species?

[It could be both, for all he knows.]

Some people would argue it's not the best mindset to have... usually humans, asari. Salarians...

Most of the galaxy, actually.

A race all their own, like humans or elves or dwarves. So species, I guess, even if we wouldn't usually use that word.

It's a divisive mindset where I'm from, too. I think... it's easy to take that outlook too far. The individuals that make up the whole matter.
thearchangel: (ur a wise guy huh?)

[personal profile] thearchangel 2025-12-14 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. Understood. Species, race, people - they're pretty interchangeable for us.

I can understand that, too. But, then again, I was always a terrible example of my own people.

[She smiles to herself at that last bit.]

I know how that feels, I think. My family is from the surface, but most dwarves live their lives underground. Surface dwarves are definitely considered outliers.
thearchangel: (Question!)

[personal profile] thearchangel 2025-12-17 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Underground?

They don't... I don't know, need UV light? Sunlight?

[personal profile] eternalhymn 2026-01-01 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
You'd think so, right? But with very few exceptions, none of them have ever seen the sun or even the sky. A lot of dwarves are afraid of it, even; there are a lot of old wives' tales about dwarves falling into the sky when they went to the surface. None of those are true, of course, but people fear what they don't understand.
thearchangel: (oh jfc sir please)

[personal profile] thearchangel 2026-01-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Falling... into the sky.

No offense, but that's the wildest thing I've ever heard.
eternalhymn: (45)

[personal profile] eternalhymn 2026-01-02 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
None taken— I've always thought it was a pretty crazy idea, myself, but a lot of them believe in it.
thearchangel: (Question!)

[personal profile] thearchangel 2026-01-02 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
But, why?

Gravity works. They have to know that.
