have you ever had a random thought come to your head when you least expect it and you just don’t know what the answer to it would be? but you just can’t stop thinking about it? and you’ve gotta say it to somebody?

Aye. It's a shame their name never got handed down--at least, not on my planet. I've not heard whoever the first sailor of Escordvi is either.

They'd be someone I'd like to know. Did the name survive where you're from?

I think it goes back so far that there's no real way to know who the first was. Even very primitive people had small rafts to cross water.

That's a good one to end an evening with, if you're of a mind to send everyone home sad and sentimental.

But the Drunken Sailor's a good choice. Especially when folk start adding their own ideas of what to do with the fellow.

What kind of ideas?

Oh, it's all right sometimes. There are nights where a person might want to go out and sing to make themselves sad on purpose.

As for ideas for the drunken sailor... there's the rusty razor and the longboat, and more besides... but I like the idea "get him on the bow to scrub the dragon."

Wy would someone want to make themselves sad?

Oh! I like the dragon one. I'd want to scrub a dragon.

[Faris knows the answer to that question. She just isn't sure how to explain "sometimes being sad about a song is easier than being sad about something real" in human people words. So this reply takes a bit.]

If they're in a real sentimental mood, say. Singing a sad song makes them feel better about it.

[Faris isn't sure how to respond to that except by saying "no there isn't" which is 1. a bit childish and 2. obviously skimming over some deep dark waters... that he does not know how to navigate in person, never mind over text communication.

There's plenty of them that see your average person as a dinner on legs, I won't deny that. But it isn't true for all of them--and if you can make friends with them, you'll never find a truer one.

But this all being over text means that nobody has to see the look on Faris' face as he thinks of them both.]

A friend of a friend, you could say. I've got a young matey whose wind drake pulled our bacon out of the fire more than once.

Oh aye, he does. But it's a little much for an ordinary human to try and pronounce, so we just call him "wind drake."
