Okay guys, I need you all to settle a bit of an argument Zelda and I are having.

See, we were out shopping for furniture for our new place and she tells me I need a bed. I say "you're right, I do! I know just the type!" So I go and I show her the hammocks because back home, I slept in a hammock. So she says [Darin clears his throat and proceeds to do his best Zelda voice] "Don't be preposterous, a hammock is not a proper bed."

Which is wrong. Because a hammock is totally a bed. Lots of things can be beds. So, to prove my point, I made this chart.



As you can see by this chart that I spent entirely too much time on, the parameters that dictate an objects "bedability" are thus. I think it's a pretty open and shut case.

Anyway, I think this explains why I should be allowed to get a hammock in my room. You guys are on my side on this, right?

[Just...you know. Ignore how he casually dropped that they're living together because he's brain dead.]

Actually, my point was going to be that you should just go ahead and use hers while keeping the hammock for yourself for when you want to relax elsewise.

She wants me to have my own bed though.

I mean I guess I can get both for now.

Who knows, might be useful later as a guest bed.

[His eyes are still shining though, in that dangerous way.]

So tell me, what's the real situation with you two? I'm reading a lot of interesting things here.

The situation is that we're roommates. I just bought a house and the apartments were terrible and I asked her if she wanted to live with me.

[He designed the house and specifically made a room he thought she'd love because she's done so much for him and he's kind of smitten but like hell he's going to say that now.]

Just asked her...right, I see.

[See this face of not buying your bull, Darin?]

And she's the one you had your little ghost marriage, is it?

Y-Yeah, we were...just helping too wayward spirits tie the knot. That's it.

[He already put two and two together back when Zelda made her post and Darin spilled then, but nice to have confirmation.]

And now you are living together.

In the process of furnishing the place, technically.

[So 'yes.' Also, he wants to ask 'why' but he's also afraid to ask.]

Is there any particular reason for this cohabitation arrangement?

Well, we're constantly spending time together so this just seemed...easier?

[He sighs.]

...Okay, look the apartments here aren't the best and I thought we both deserved something...nice? Her more than me but I'm making a killing at the forge so...

[Cid will just hum and slowly nod along before staring at him long and hard.]

So how many people have told you you need to stop pretending and date each other?

LITERALLY EVERYONE.

[A quiet chuckle before he regards Darin a little more seriously.]

Is it because of your different stations, circumstances, responsibilities, and that you are both from different worlds?

[OH HE IS SO VERY AMUSED RIGHT NOW though he wears the expression with just a light smug grin.]

[And he actually spoke to Zelda but he's not spilling that part.]

She's got...

She has a home already. She and I have talked about this. There's a house, and a village, and a person already waiting for her.

[He doesn't know if Cid knows about her being a Princess and as much as Darin would love to use his "he's just a blacksmith" line, he can't out Zelda like that. He won't be the one to blow her cover when she trusted him with the secret of her identity.]

I'm not her home. I'm...I'm a stopgap. And I'm fine with that. As long as she's happy, that's literally all that matters to me.

[ramuhs]

[Hmm...

There is understanding in his eyes, especially since it matches from what he had learned.]

Then I don't have much else to say.

[Actually there's quite a bit he could say, but well. He'll see what Darin says first.]

So...yeah.

Dating her means keeping her here. And gods above, there's a part of me that would love that. She makes me feel like I belong somewhere. She told me to join up with you guys first! All she wants is for me to belong somewhere! And I'm actually starting to feel like maybe I do! That's why I bought the house, Cid. Because I wanted a home.

And I wanted her to be a part of it.

But I know that anything we had would be temporary at best. And she cares so much that if we were to have anything more than this...undefined thing it would break her heart knowing she couldn't stay.

I've...made my peace with it. There's a man out there who can be what I can't and you know what?

I think it's pretty great. Knowing you have a place out there in the wider world is a pretty amazing thing. So...I'll just do what I do best.

I'll forge a way to get her home. And until then, I'll just...look out for her. And be happy that I was even blessed to exist in the same moment in time as her.

[ramuhs]

[There's a slight widening of his eyes as he listens, however this does sound very much like something Darin would do. So he can't help but smile a bit.]

And the off chance that she does want something more and find a way to stay here with you?

I’ll support her with everything I have. Everything I am.

Because that’s what a good smith does. We throw our arms and hammers to support the people and causes we care about. We make sure that the heroes come home to the people that they love.

[ramuhs]

[There's a quiet chuckle at that.]

[A light smile as he regards Darin for a moment.]

I've seen many couples in my time, and all different for many reasons. Since it seems you both have already discussed it and came to an arrangement that you both agree with, then you likely don't need any other opinions or advice.

What's important is that you both continue to be open about your feelings and wants, and it's all right to be a little selfish. Sometimes being selfless can make things worse, instead.

[A moment of pause at that, as if he's reflecting before he continues.]

I wish you both the best, however it may look. Just don't have any regrets whatever choice you make.

This may be your only chance, after all, so make the most of it and enjoy what you have while you can.

I don't really know how to 'want' things but...I think I'm figuring it out. Slowly.

Besides...I'm not the type of guy who looks down on what he has now. What we have is more than I ever thought possible. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
