Okay guys, I need you all to settle a bit of an argument Zelda and I are having.

See, we were out shopping for furniture for our new place and she tells me I need a bed. I say "you're right, I do! I know just the type!" So I go and I show her the hammocks because back home, I slept in a hammock. So she says [Darin clears his throat and proceeds to do his best Zelda voice] "Don't be preposterous, a hammock is not a proper bed."

Which is wrong. Because a hammock is totally a bed. Lots of things can be beds. So, to prove my point, I made this chart.



As you can see by this chart that I spent entirely too much time on, the parameters that dictate an objects "bedability" are thus. I think it's a pretty open and shut case.

Anyway, I think this explains why I should be allowed to get a hammock in my room. You guys are on my side on this, right?

Well, I'll admit my own bias - I went ten years without an actual bed to sleep on, so anything that is 1% comfier than steel and rocks counts as a bed to me.

That being said, key words are essential here. She said "proper" bed. Would that be because she wants to share it?

Technically, while one can sleep in a hammock, I would argue that a hammock is not a bed. One can sleep any number of places, but before even beginning to go into what qualifies and what does not, I imagine a hammock must truly be hell on one's back.

While I'd normally agree that anything could be a bed if one's tired enough and hammocks are fine aboard ships, I assume this is for a place on solid ground? Being thrown out of bed during a storm wouldn't be an issue then.

Though I suppose I'm a bit biased; I've gotten stuck in hammocks before or just punctured them entirely. I've never seen a...bean bag chair before today, but I assume the same would happen.

And I don't think it'd be wise to use a parachute that way, unless your bones are much stronger than mine.

And my bones are pretty strong but I think a parachue hanging from something would be the ideal para-bed set up. Freefalling in a parachute is probably the last place you should be sleeping.
