TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

There have been a lot of riftfarers arriving lately. It seems like there have been more arriving than usual. So many different kinds of people from different kinds of worlds with stories to tell and experiences to give.

A little game has appeared on the shellphone network in hopes of getting to know just a little more about these otherworlders. You might find it on your shellphone as you’re scrolling through one day.

Tell the world two truths and one lie about yourself. And let others try and decipher which of the three is your lie. If they can guess right, perhaps you’ve been able to make a new acquaintance. Or in the least learn more about someone from another walk of life.

[Darin jerks the phone back, then looks at Zelda.]

[Looks back at the post as his cheeks start to flush.]

B-But— !

A GOLDEN HORSE?!?! COME ON, SERIOUSLY?! BUT I THOUGHT YOU WERE TRYING TO—

I MEAN I KNOW I WAS JEALOUS BUT—

[He sputters, his mouth opening and closing, gawping like a fish out of water.]

A GOLDEN HORSE?!

[In the tone of someone who is calling from the peanut gallery:]

You two know you’re still recording, right??

[ The more Darin tries to backpedal, the more he stumbles over his words and blushes. The volume of his voice grows with his embarrassment, until he's bright red and blustering at the top of his lungs.

Oh. Oh no, that's... that's terribly cute. Zelda hastily lifts a hand to her mouth in an ineffective attempt to hide her smile.

Gods, he's unbearably cute when he's flustered. She shouldn't laugh, she really shouldn't... but it's impossible not to. ]

Yes, Darin, a golden horse. [ She confirms in a gentle, melodic tone.

She steps closer to him. Oh, she shouldn't tease him; his pride is already taking quite a beating. But she can't help herself, her gentle smile turning ever so slightly impish. ]

You were jealous?

Was jealous. Before I got to know him. I'm not really all that jealous anymore. There's nothing to be jealous of. Why would I even be jealous? I could save you and your kingdom if I really wanted to.

[He huffs, his cheeks growing even brighter red than before.]

[Maybe he's still a tiny bit jealous, but not for the reasons everyone else would think.]

A-And I was technically right anyway, because of course you would tame a golden horse.

...How the hell did you find a golden horse anyway???

[Are you going to let him change the subject that easily, Zelda?]

It was injured and I heard its cries while I was on an expedition in the Hebra Mountains.

[ She answers Darin's question matter-of-factly, as if it's a perfectly normal thing to find an injured golden horse in the middle of a frigid mountain range.

But no, she's not going to let him change the subject so easily. Standing directly in front of him, Zelda places a hand on his forearm, guiding him to lower his shellphone so that she can get closer. ]

"Not really all that jealous anymore," hmm~? [ With his phone out of the way, Zelda playfully jabs her index finger into the center of Darin's chest. ] You sprinted all the way to the docks screaming at the top of your lungs that "you knew it the entire time" because you were jealous of Link, but not anymore?

[ She looks up at him with green eyes that ask "who are you trying to convince"? Because this certainly isn't convincing Zelda. ]

I-I...W-Well, I mean...

[Darin jolts and takes a step back, only to find himself literally backed against the wall of her cabin. Green eyes dart around as if he means to find a way to escape, but they both know he's far too stubborn to run.]

[No, he'd rather dig this hole deeper than run away.]

I-I was just...i-it's like I said! E-Everyone hears the way you talk about him s-so...all I'm saying is that I wouldn't be surprised! A-And I'm not jealous! What do I even have to be jealous of?? Hell, Link should be jealous of me because I...I'm...

[His mind races. What does he possibly have over the hero of Hyrule? His cheeks burn crimson.]

I'm tall.

[Take that, Link, fabled Hero of Hyrule. He is so totally not jealous that you've saved Zelda and he hasn't.]

[ The impishness in Zelda's grin turns downright smug as Darin's back hits the cabin wall. Whenever he gets himself into a position like this, when offered the choice between a rope and a shovel, Darin will almost always take the shovel.

And Zelda... well, Zelda is happy to let him keep digging. He is so very fun to tease like this.

She matches Darin's step back with a step forward of her own. ]

True, you are quite a bit taller than Link. That is certainly worthy of his envy.

[ Her hand, the one she just poked him with, drifts to his arm. Zelda's eyes flit in that direction as she lazily up his forearm and over the curve of his bicep. ]

You are broad as well. Link is strong too, of course, but given his frame, he will always be lithe. I do wonder if he ever wishes he could put on more muscle~

Y...Y-Yeah! I mean...l-look, the guy's good looking and all! But I'm pretty sure if he tried to bulk up he'd topple over. He'd just...y'know. Roll everywhere.

[Darin's eyes flit to Zelda's hand, then back to her face. Then back again. Gods that smile. That knowing, teasing smile. Zelda is beautiful and her joyous smile can light up a room. But it's that very assured smile that completely makes Darin weak at the knees.]

S-So...you know...what have I got to be jealous of? I was only just...y'yknow. I was just saying that 'I knew it' because...

[He clears his throat and lifts his gaze to the ceiling. His other hand absently moving to comb through his hair.]

Y-You guys have a deep bond! Y-Yeah! So...clearly...people can absolutely see the two of you dating.

[ She has him wholly and completely wrapped around her finger and she can't stop grinning. He's trying so hard to resist her that he can barely even look at her.

But he is still resisting, so perhaps it's time to switch tactics. ]

Mmm, you make a valid point. Link and I are very close. We have been through a lot together, shared a lot together. I suppose it is not too much of a stretch to see why people think we would be in love.

[ Zelda lets her concession hang in the air as she steps back from Darin, withdrawing her hand from his arm. She clasps her hands behind her back and gives him a sunny smile. ]

Since there's nothing for you to be jealous of, perhaps I should let you be about your business. I'm sure you still have much to do at the forge.

[Darin certainly, very visibly bristles and Zelda can practically hear the train of thought rolling into the station of his mind.]

['Does that mean that it's a stretch for people to think she's in love with him?']

[He crosses his arms over his chest defiantly.]

N...Now hold on a second! I think that's a bit skewed! The way you talk about him would absolutely give that impression! But if I had met him before I got to hear you gush about him at every turn? I'm pretty sure I would have thought you were crazy!

I mean...come on! Link wanders around like one of those...crypto...crippy...

Like one of those weird monster things people make up stores about.
