TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

There have been a lot of riftfarers arriving lately. It seems like there have been more arriving than usual. So many different kinds of people from different kinds of worlds with stories to tell and experiences to give.

A little game has appeared on the shellphone network in hopes of getting to know just a little more about these otherworlders. You might find it on your shellphone as you’re scrolling through one day.

Tell the world two truths and one lie about yourself. And let others try and decipher which of the three is your lie. If they can guess right, perhaps you’ve been able to make a new acquaintance. Or in the least learn more about someone from another walk of life.

It is depressing that such a thing is present across vastly different worlds. I try to stop as many as I can and help those they hurt.

[ But he is still just one man. ]

It's why I have a job, but I often wish it wasn't necessary. There's only so much one person can do, though we often underestimate the impact we have.

[ she gets it. dock town relies on her and even if she could forget it, they'd never let her. the people know her and her reputation. they count on her. even if her city often stabs her in the back for trying. ]

It is better than nothing, but that does not stop me from wishing I could do more. Some of the ones I helped really had no one they could turn to. They tried the "proper" channels and were cast aside or had incompetents take their cases, failing them that way.

That describes most of my cases. My neighborhood is full of the lost, lonely, desperate. People who have nowhere else to turn. The "authorities" won't help and I wouldn't trust them if they did. So I take the cases no one else will. Lost items. Missing people. Things people need answers for, but often have bad endings.

Indeed. I haven't much trust in the local authorities either. They are too quick to make a call without all the evidence, and they won't listen to reason when it comes from someone they consider still a boy.

[ He always had the feeling that if he were just, say five years older, everything would be easier. They would listen. Cordona had been different. Cordona didn't have the numbers needed, had lazy or corrupt investigators, and were influenced by Mycroft, making the last name Holmes open doors for Sherlock instead of having them open on his own merit. ]

Ours are just corrupt. Take bribes from anyone, if you've the money and power to back it up. They're the reason I started the work I do and why I still have it. Life in Minrathous is easy if you have the mage bloodlines and money for it. For the rest of us? It's a hard life.

We work so one day those who hire us won't have to.

I must admit that some have the drive to do better and help people, but circumstances being what they are cause them to become disillusioned with the force and leave. I met one man who had to fake his death so that he could retire and live in peace. They wouldn't let him leave because he was the only investigator who actually did his job.

Don't have that. The job is what I make of it. I'm the only one who will. The templars, the guard, the magisters. The vast majority don't care; they can be bought. Only a handful actually work to help and they have to do it in very subtle ways.

Hate that so many things are so similar and that one of yours had to do something so drastic.

Yes, I could have revealed that he lived, but I felt he had done his time. Going back might help a few people, but trapped once more, he could become that which he hated.

The officers believed me without question. They had all the same evidence at their disposal, but they didn't follow any of it to the logical conclusion. It did not stop them from claiming responsibility for solving the case either. The officer had even gotten a promotion off my investigations.
