I've been here a few weeks, and this isn't the first time I've found myself in the position of being an outsider. So, I just have to ask. What's your experience with the locals and their treatment of us rift-farers?

Eh, they're not too bad--your regular pack of do-gooders, scoundrels, and outright eccentrics. Don't act like a bilgebrain and you should get on with them all right.

I'm glad to hear that. It didn't expect that people would stop existing with the full spectrum of personalities and preferences I'm used to. For better or for worse. As long as most of them are better.

Aye, well, I can't tell you which side of the scales it falls on compared to your own planet. To mine, I'd say it's more or less alike.

Does that go for things in general or just the people?

They can be nice. However, that is my experience with them. As long as you are nice to them, they'll be nice to you back.

I get it. I realize I'm generalizing things here but I wouldn't expect them to put up with poor treatment.

Being a riftfarer isn't so bad. I've never had anyone treat me any differently, at least. We're just people living here and trying to make it, too. I've maybe got a scowl from a cranky old lady here and there, but yeah.

As far as I know, though. Riftfarers have been showing up in this world for years now.

If it's an old lady you probably deserved it.

Thank you for sharing though. I won't lie, I'm much more used to people who tend to hold differences against one another. Some who even used it to justify some pretty terrible things. Just living together sounds like a nice change of pace.

No, usually I'm the one holding doors for them and helping them across the roads. I'm sure it was just a one-off.

And yeah, I get it. Most worlds have sort of issue along the same lines. But I can safely say there hasn't been a lot of that with the riftfarers in general here on the leviathans.

[A beat.] But now that I think about it... Some of the deepwater merfolk can get aggressive towards us.

As far as you know, did anything prompt the merfolk?

The locals are fine, for the most part. The Armadas see us all as pawns. We're just pieces on their boards, and they see no problem in shoving us around if they decide that's "what's best".

what is an armada if not a military operation on some level
that's a different kind of trouble than what i was concerned about but i appreciate the assessment

It's a fairly poor one, in my estimation.

They branded us all, a while back. To keep one side from interacting with the other. Not to mention, there were a group of Paladins behind a bunch of kidnappings happening at the same time.

You don't just mean the normal tattoos do you? Wish I could say I'm surprised regardless. An institution may be founded by sound ideas but it's still populated by men.

Almost all of them have been pretty nice to me. There's some tribes that are a bit...different, but I don't think I've ever noticed them treating me different because I was a rift-farer. They just treated me different because I wasn't from their island.

Sounds more like typical provincial politics. Have you encountered any that are better off being avoided?

There was an island with a volcano and snail people. A sect of them belonged to a cult and they were trying to sacrifice people. I would stay away from them.

It just kind of depends on where you go and how Riftfarers have treated people in the past.

So I feel like it's just like anywhere else.

That's the consensus I'm getting. So, I'll swear to be on my best behavior.

I guess with all these worlds colliding, that probably has some benefit on local development as well.

You can look around at the different cities on the leviathans and see how we've all kind of changed things. There's a blend of peoples for sure.

The deeper into the ocean you go, though? Little less nice.

Pretty neutral. I don't have issues with the locals, usually. Have you? Anyone I should know about to avoid?

nothing yet. at this point i've heard about hostilities from the deep sea villages and a cult of snails conducting human sacrifices
so maybe avoid those. along with the usual marauders, brigands and thieves

well, not great. Most on the main islands are fine... just watch your pockets on Nogard, unless you can scare people off with a good glare.
