TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

There have been a lot of riftfarers arriving lately. It seems like there have been more arriving than usual. So many different kinds of people from different kinds of worlds with stories to tell and experiences to give.

A little game has appeared on the shellphone network in hopes of getting to know just a little more about these otherworlders. You might find it on your shellphone as you’re scrolling through one day.

Tell the world two truths and one lie about yourself. And let others try and decipher which of the three is your lie. If they can guess right, perhaps you’ve been able to make a new acquaintance. Or in the least learn more about someone from another walk of life.

I discarded my mortal flesh, crossed thirteen other worlds, and waited over twelve millennia to see a dear friend again. [ Up yours, Exarch. ]

I have been to and seen the edges of the universe.

My aforementioned friend fought a volcano to save a vineyard.

Technically, Azem stole the Ifrita concept and manifested her using the fire-aspected aether of the volcano.

I heard when I resumed my studies in Amaurot. Although, my colleagues speak more about the theft portion of the event and less of the vineyard.

Granted, I would not be surprised if Azem did fight a volcano one day. The previous Azem's companion struck a meteor from the sky once, did he not?

'Tis almost expected for occupieres of the seat of Azem to do impossible things. Since the volcano's aether was repurposed into the concept of Ifrita, I consider it equivalent to 'fighting the volcano'. Had its fires not been raging to begin with, there would have been no need to evacuate the citizens of that island.

As much as I was grateful to have the matter resolved, I was not impressed to hear that Hythlodaeus allowed them to take such a dangerous concept out.

[A difference of perspective. It makes sense. He nods, even though no one is with him to see it.]

He seems like a man good with words.

[He pauses, a knot of dread tightening in his chest, but pushing himself, he adds:]

Emet-Selch? Joshua Rosfield knew our people as Ascians. Is...

The first thing you typed... is that why?

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2025-12-04 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh. Right. He hadn't even been thinking about whether Erichthonios would see this when he wrote this but it would be cruel to keep the truth from the boy forever, wouldn't it? ]

Yes. Disembodied souls, occupying the space between worlds: the void. It was necessary to escape Hydaelyn's blade. Only myself, Elidibus, and your father managed it.

[ Well, this is terrifying and a bit concerning. ]

I feel it does not matter which is the lie when even the truths are beyond comprehension.

Although, it is at least easier to picture the latter happening. Did your friend block the top of the volcano or divert the lava flow?
emet_sulk: of kindness (03 a clear and unambiguous act)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2025-12-04 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
No, they used the volatile aether of the volcano and used it to manifest the form of a concept known as Ifrita - a being of primordial fire - which they then fought. Upon its defeat its energy was dispersed harmlessly and the volcano returned to its dormant state, thus saving the island and its local vineyards.

For the record, I made sure to let them know what an utterly reckless idea it was after they returned.

Your friend fought a spirit avatar of a volcano and won.

[ Yeah. Sure. Why not at this point? ]

Does that protect the vineyards permanently from the volcano, or does the protection wear thin over time?
emet_sulk: (18 well you'll be fine)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2025-12-06 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
In a way. The energy which would have normally prompted an eruption was dispersed harmlessly, as I said, and it would take many centuries before it built again.

So in a sense, yes, the 'protection' wears thin over time. 'Tis more accurate to say that nature resumes its course.

[ Why do all of these sound like the lie..... ]

I must say, Emet-Selch, yours might be the most challenging response to this little game.

I feel that the only one of these things I can somewhat confidently guess to be true is the third, given that I know a few people who would probably do the same in that situation.
emet_sulk: (38 I do like sleep)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2025-12-04 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
In my long life I've experienced a great many things others would find implausible.

You are correct about the third being true. My friend recklessly decided to venture forth and quell a volcano in the way they know best: through combat.
multidisciplinary: do not take! (🌻 515)

[personal profile] multidisciplinary 2025-12-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
[ 'Through combat'??????????????

That...

That seems like something both Link and Darin would try to do... ]

And how did your friend fare against their foe?

[ Why does Zelda have this terrible feeling Emet-Selch is going to say his friend won? ]
emet_sulk: (13 the world belongs to us)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2025-12-09 01:08 am (UTC)(link)

They won, of course.
feralhumanity: (Huh...)

[personal profile] feralhumanity 2025-12-03 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[. . .]

You know, some of these really make me wonder what kind of worlds people live in.
emet_sulk: (18 well you'll be fine)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2025-12-04 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
That is what makes this game an amusing past-time, wouldn't you agree? When you've no idea what passes for 'normal' in another world, something as banal as a sentient canine may be considered outrageous.
feralhumanity: (Perhaps best described another way)

[personal profile] feralhumanity 2025-12-08 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
You're telling me.

I looked at your answers, and they're so ridiculously unbelievable that it's hard to consider any of them as true, let alone which one's the lie.

Is the third one a lie? I can't imagine how someone fights an actual volcano. Unless it was a volcano like monster?
emet_sulk: (38 I do like sleep)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2025-12-05 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly not. My friend turned the volcano's energy into a...creature, shall we say. They fought that as a proxy for the volcano.
obliviscere: (Namine (2))

[personal profile] obliviscere 2025-12-06 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't that make it technically not completely true then? If your friend wasn't the one directly to fight the volcano?

But maybe the second one then? The first one is the most believable.
